MANILA, Philippines – The government is verifying reports that at least eight people are dead after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the coast off Sarangani in Mindanao on Monday, June 8, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
According to the OCD, initial information from the ground reported three dead in Davao Occidental, another three in General Santos City, and two fatalities in South Cotabato.
Meanwhile, OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo said local authorities are assessing damage to key infrastructure such as the General Santos Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines earlier suspended operations at the airport pending an assessment of its equipment and facilities.
