The clash between tech innovation and government scrutiny is rising. The latest development revolves around a crypto news linked to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. As per the latest crypto news, Apple has removed Dorsey’s Bitchat from the Apple Store in China due to regulatory concerns.

This news underscores the growing scrutiny technology is facing in China. It also highlights the strict internet rules that determine which applications can operate in China.

Crypto News: Why Did Chinese Apple Store Remove Bitchat?

Stringent internet and crypto regulations continue to tighten in China. Amid these stricter rules, new crypto news emerged: Apple reportedly removed Bitchat from its Chinese App Store. It is a decentralized messaging app created by Block CEO Jack Dorsey.

Notably, the move followed China’s internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), raising concerns about the application. Jack Dorsey shared an X post, revealing the crypto news. He wrote, “Bitchat pulled from the China App Store.”

According to the CAC, Bitchat broke rules for online services that could influence public opinion or organize social activity. The agency stated that applications are required to undergo security checks before launch.

Apple told Dorsey that both the App Store version and the TestFlight beta would no longer be available in China. However, the app is still accessible in other countries.

It is worth noting that the crypto news comes on the heels of Jack Dorsey’s recent hint at the revival of a Bitcoin Faucet. His platform, Block, may soon introduce a Bitcoin Faucet that provides free BTC to help users get started with crypto.

Significantly, China’s CyberSpace Administration (CAC) stated that Bitchat broke Article 3 of its 2018 regulations. The law covers online services that can influence public opinion or organize social activity. These rules require apps to complete a security assessment before launch and take responsibility for the results.

Apple also reminded Dorsey that all apps must follow local laws in the countries where they are available. The app review team stated, “We know this stuff is complicated, but it is your responsibility to understand and make sure your app conforms with all local laws, not just the guidelines below.” They added, “And of course, apps that solicit, promote, or encourage criminal or reckless behavior will be rejected.”

This crypto news is attracting more attention, given China’s restrictive approach to digital assets. While global countries are competing to become leaders in the crypto space, China is still taking a cautious approach.

Bitchat has been a popular messaging app, especially in countries like Madagascar, Uganda, Nepal, Indonesia, and Iran. Like China, these countries have also taken a strict stance on the internet and technology. They had previously tried to shut down the internet or block regular messaging apps during protests.

The app works without an internet connection, using Bluetooth and mesh networks to send messages. This design makes it hard for authorities to block, which may explain why it clashes with China’s strict internet controls.

Even though Bitchat was removed from China, it’s still available in other countries, Apple’s app review team confirmed. The app has been downloaded over three million times on Chrome, including more than 92,000 downloads last week. On the Google Play Store, it has over one million registered downloads.
