During the second day of the HumanX event in San Francisco, we attended a press conference with Jamie Teevan, Chief Scientist and Technical Fellow at Microsoft, who provided an overview of the role of AI in the company’s products and its future developments.

Teevan is a central figure in the development of AI at Microsoft: she led the creation of Microsoft 365 Copilot and contributed to the development of advanced algorithms for Bing, also making it onto the TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the field of artificial intelligence.

AI Models: From Personal to Collaborative with Microsoft

According to Teevan, the models currently in use are primarily trained for individual use. They rely on large amounts of data, ranging from social media to complex documents such as reports and conference proceedings.

However, the true evolutionary leap will be represented by models designed for collaboration among people. This will require new algorithmic approaches, and it is precisely in this direction that Microsoft is focusing its research.

AGI: How Close Are We?

One of the topics discussed was Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

According to Teevan, artificial intelligence is already profoundly transforming the way we live and work. This leads to a key consideration: AGI might be closer than we think.

We have indeed reached a level where AI is capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge in various contexts, demonstrating a versatility increasingly similar to that of humans—even though the goal has not yet been fully achieved.

The AI Job Market: What Companies Like Microsoft Are Looking For

The growth of AI is generating a strong demand for talent. Companies are seeking profiles that are in the early stages of their career in the sector (early-stage), equipped with a solid education, highly flexible, and adaptable.

This reflects a market still under development, where skills and mindset are as important as experience.

Is Copilot the Final Destination?

Teevan was clear: there is not yet a “final product”. Microsoft Copilot represents one of the most advanced manifestations of Microsoft’s AI, but it is still continuously evolving. Research in this field is constant, consisting of experiments and iterations.

An especially intriguing point concerns the relationship between technology and human behavior: while models change rapidly, the way people collaborate tends to remain surprisingly stable.

AI and Productivity: The Human Role Remains Central

Teevan referenced the report that Microsoft has been publishing since 2021, The New Future of Work, highlighting how generative AI is extremely effective in content creation.

However, the best results emerge when teams function well. In other words, technology amplifies productivity, but it does not replace the quality of human relationships and teamwork.

One of the most interesting statements from the conference encapsulates this concept:

“People also enjoy engaging in repetitive tasks, at least to some extent. AI doesn’t necessarily eliminate tedious work: it eliminates micro-management.”

Leadership in the AI Era

In such a fast-paced and transformative context, leadership plays a crucial role. At Microsoft, Teevan explained, leading means being able to maintain control and an overall vision in a constantly evolving environment.

Managing the impact of artificial intelligence is not just a technological issue, but also an organizational and cultural one.
