TLDR

  • Coinbase adds Upto to x402, enabling flexible AI pricing models
  • x402 now supports usage-based payments for AI compute tasks
  • Upto allows buyers to set max spend while paying actual costs
  • Gasless payments improve x402 usability and developer access
  • x402 aims to regain traction despite declining transaction volumes

Coinbase has upgraded the x402 protocol with a new pricing model that supports flexible, usage-based payments for AI services. The update introduces a system that replaces fixed fees with variable pricing tied to actual compute usage. This shift positions x402 to better support agentic AI workloads and dynamic service costs.

x402 Introduces Upto for Variable AI Pricing

Coinbase has rolled out the “Upto” scheme to enhance x402 payment flexibility. The update enables services to charge based on actual resource consumption rather than fixed fees. As a result, x402 now supports AI tasks with unpredictable costs such as inference and data queries.

x402 required exact payment amounts before execution, which limited its use in dynamic environments. However, the new model allows users to authorize a maximum spending limit per request. The system charges only the final computed cost after task completion.

The upgrade improves payment efficiency and reduces cost mismatches across services. Besides, developers can now build applications that align pricing with real-time compute usage. This change strengthens x402 as a payment layer for evolving AI-driven ecosystems.

Fixing Flat-Fee Limits in x402 Infrastructure

The earlier x402 model forced equal pricing for both simple and complex tasks. Users often paid more for basic operations or less for intensive workloads. The new Upto scheme removes this limitation by aligning payments with actual service demands.

Under the updated system, sellers define a maximum price while buyers approve spending caps. Then, servers calculate final costs based on usage metrics like compute time or token count. x402 ensures accurate billing and prevents inefficiencies in AI service payments.

The protocol also integrates gasless transactions through the CDP Facilitator. This feature simplifies user interaction and lowers barriers for adoption. As a result, x402 becomes more practical for large-scale AI and data-driven applications.

x402 Gains Backing Amid Adoption Challenges

Linux Foundation now oversees x402 after its transfer from Coinbase. Meanwhile, major firms like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services support its development through the x402 Foundation. This backing signals strong industry interest in agentic commerce infrastructure.

Despite this support, x402 adoption has declined in 2026 after peaking in late 2025. Weekly transactions dropped from millions to below one million early this year. Furthermore, activity fell to just over 100,000 transactions by late March.

The Upto upgrade aims to revive growth by expanding use cases. It enables x402 to support high-demand AI environments that require flexible and fast payments. Consequently, the protocol may regain traction as agentic commerce continues to evolve.
