  • Shares of AMZN climbed approximately 4% after the deal was revealed
  • The acquisition delivers 24 active satellites, orders for 50+ additional units, and valuable L and S band spectrum rights

In a strategic move to enhance its space-based connectivity ambitions, Amazon has sealed an agreement to purchase Globalstar for roughly $11.6 billion, positioning itself as a more formidable competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink service.

Shares of AMZN rose by approximately 4% in response to the news.

Through this transaction, Amazon secures ownership of Globalstar’s 24 functioning satellites along with commitments for around 50 additional spacecraft. Perhaps more significantly, the deal transfers valuable L and S band spectrum licenses to Amazon—assets essential for enabling direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communication technology.

D2D technology allows smartphones and other devices to establish connections with satellites in low Earth orbit without relying on traditional cellular infrastructure. Amazon has identified this as a priority market segment, with widespread deployment targeted for approximately 2028.

Amazon will also assume control of Globalstar’s current partnership with Apple, which utilizes the satellite network to power Emergency SOS features, Messages, Roadside Assistance services, and Find My functionality on iPhone 14 models and later, plus Apple Watch Ultra devices. As part of the acquisition agreement, Amazon has both extended and enhanced this Apple collaboration.

To put Amazon’s current position in perspective, the company has launched only 241 satellites to date. Under its 2020 Federal Communications Commission authorization, Amazon must place half of its projected 3,236-satellite network into orbit by July 30, 2026. The company has already submitted a request to the FCC seeking additional time to meet this requirement.

Meanwhile, SpaceX operates more than 10,000 satellites and possesses its own rocket launch infrastructure. This launch capability advantage represents Amazon’s most significant competitive hurdle.

Wall Street Endorsement From Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley’s Brian Nowak identified five strategic advantages the Globalstar transaction brings to Amazon Leo operations.

His analysis highlighted the spectrum licensing assets, the enlarged satellite fleet, entry into the D2D connectivity market, Globalstar’s Band 53 terrestrial spectrum with potential applications in warehouse automation and robotics systems, and the inherited Apple commercial relationship as primary sources of value creation.

Nowak maintained his Overweight recommendation on AMZN while lifting his price objective to $300, indicating potential appreciation of around 20% from present trading levels.

Broader Wall Street sentiment mirrors this optimism. Among 45 analysts tracking the stock, 42 assign Buy ratings while 3 recommend Hold positions. The consensus 12-month price target stands at $284.77, implying approximately 14% upside potential.

Financial Strain on the Horizon

This acquisition compounds what is already shaping up as an exceptionally capital-intensive period for Amazon. Management has projected $200 billion in capital spending for 2026, an investment level that may drive free cash flow into negative territory.

Should Leo-related investments continue escalating through 2027, cash flow pressures could persist across multiple years.

Amazon has established preliminary commercial contracts, including partnerships with airline operators and telecommunications carriers, as CEO Andy Jassy noted in his latest shareholder communication. However, the Leo satellite venture introduces considerably more uncertainty compared to Amazon’s established cloud computing and retail operations.

Amazon’s most recent satellite deployment brought its orbital fleet to 241 satellites, still substantially below the FCC’s mid-year deployment benchmark requirement.
