MANILA, Philippines – Former senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV faced the House justice committee on Wednesday, April 22, to reiterate his claim that Vice President Sara Duterte and her family received over P100 million in payouts from alleged drug lord Samuel “Sammy” Uy.
Trillanes was summoned to the impeachment hearing against the Vice President, as the justice committee weighs in on allegations of her unexplained wealth.
Trillanes’ testimony breaks down the P181.6 million in payments that Uy supposedly made via cashier’s and personal checks to various members of the Duterte family from 2011 to 2013:
According to Trillanes, Uy is a known business partner of Michael Yang, former president Duterte’s economic adviser who has been embroiled in the Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corporation and Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) scandals.
Uy was also among the top campaign donors of the Duterte patriarch in his 2016 presidential run.
Trillanes’ 11-page affidavit, excluding annexes, repeated old allegations that VP Sara and her father maintained a joint bank account where P2.4 billion flowed between 2003 and 2016.
Trillanes also claimed that Sara’s individual and joint bank accounts, including those with husband Mans Carpio, entered into transactions worth P111.63 million.
The Vice President supposedly failed to declare these funds in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).
“In my view, all of these constitute the ‘impeachable offenses’ of betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and other high crimes as stated in the Constitution,” Trillanes said.
The Vice President said last year she was willing to answer questions about her bank accounts in an impeachment trial.
“As of now, the information with regard to the bank accounts were obtained illegally and I have no obligation to answer them,” Duterte said in July 2025. – Rappler.com
