Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao once feared that "witchcraft" was taking over the country and called himself "African American" because he lived in Africa for a period.
After Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was fired this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth promoted Cao to fill the position temporarily despite controversial comments uncovered by FactPost. The report included allegations that the Vietnamese-American once asked for a KKK mask with slits cut where eye holes would be.

A video showed Cao being interviewed about his views.
"Again, it's, you know, we can't let it turn like this," he told an interviewer at the time. "There's a place in Monterey, California, called Lovers Point. The original name was Lovers of Christ Point. But now it's become, they took out the Christ, it's Lovers Point."
"And it's really — Monterey is a very dark place now," he continued. "A lot of witchcraft and the Wiccan community has really taken over there and we can't let that happen to Virginia."
In another clip, Cao explained why he identified as an African American.
"I'm African-American because I grew up in Africa," he insisted.
