Anthropic, the AI research firm behind the Claude family of large language models, has announced a strategic partnership with NEC Corporation to advance AI-native engineering in Japan. As part of the deal, NEC will deploy Claude to 30,000 employees globally and co-develop secure, domain-specific AI solutions for the Japanese market. This marks Anthropic’s first global collaboration with a Japan-based corporation, underscoring its growing foothold in the region.

NEC, a major player in IT and network technologies, plans to integrate Anthropic’s Claude models—including the recently released Claude Opus 4.7—into its Security Operations Center services and other offerings. The collaboration will focus initially on sectors like finance, manufacturing, and government, areas where high safety and reliability standards are crucial. NEC will launch a Center of Excellence to train its engineers and scale its AI capabilities, making it one of Japan’s largest AI-enabled engineering teams. Internally, the company will use Claude Code to enhance its own operations under its "Client Zero" strategy, which tests new technologies on NEC itself before rolling them out to customers.

Beyond internal use, NEC and Anthropic aim to develop tailored AI solutions for Japanese businesses. For instance, Claude will be integrated into the NEC BluStellar Scenario, which provides consulting, AI tools, and digital infrastructure for data-driven management and customer experience. The collaboration also extends to cybersecurity, with Claude playing a role in defending against increasingly sophisticated threats.
