INSTITUTIONAL | Coinbase Partners with Egyptian Crypto Infrastructure Firm, Kemet, After Processing Over $30 Billion in Trading Volume

Coinbase has partnered with Kemet, an Egyptian-founded crypto infrastructure firm, to expand access to its institutional derivatives trading products, according to

The deal will allow institutional clients to connect to Coinbase’s multiple trading venues including its

• main exchange,
• derivatives platform,
• international exchange, and
• Deribit

through a single interface, simplifying access to complex trading tools.

Kemet, which provides order and execution management as well as portfolio and risk systems built for crypto derivatives, aims to replace the multiple software tools typically required by large financial firms with a unified platform.

Large institutions typically rely on three separate systems to trade

• one for order entry,
• another for execution, and
• a third for risk management

often sourced from different vendors and loosely integrated.

Kemet consolidates these functions into a single platform, enabling firms to track an order from initiation through execution, route it for optimal pricing, and provide real-time visibility into risk exposure, all within one system.

“Coinbase was built as a crypto-native exchange and was mostly catering to crypto-native users,” said Ash Ashmawy, Kemet Founder and CEO of Kemet.

  “Large traditional players are used to certain standards and certain ways of expressing how they want to trade. We are bringing that experience into the platform.”

As part of the partnership, Kemet has also secured an undisclosed investment from Coinbase Ventures underscoring Coinbase’s push to strengthen its institutional offering.

The move comes as crypto derivatives account for the majority of global digital asset trading activity with institutions increasingly seeking advanced trading infrastructure.

Despite strong retail crypto adoption across Africa, institutional derivatives trading on the continent remains limited due to regulatory uncertainty and under-developed market infrastructure for institutional trading according to Ashmawy.

“There is still a lack of regulatory clarity around derivatives in most African countries.

More importantly, the infrastructure foundation for that kind of trading is not fully there yet. Even across traditional finance in Africa, whether in Nigeria, Egypt, or other large markets, the vast majority of trading is still happening on spot markets.”
