Three trains, one Causeway, here’s what’s actually worth knowing about getting to JB by rail in 2026.

Sat in Causeway traffic for two hours on a Saturday morning? The train is the way out. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau crosses from Woodlands to JB Sentral in 5 minutes, costs less than a kopi, and runs 31 times a day. In 2026, it’s no longer the only option: KTMB’s new JB↔KL ETS opens up rail travel deeper into Malaysia, and the long-awaited RTS Link from Woodlands North to Bukit Chagar opens in January 2027.

The KTM Shuttle Tebrau is the only direct train between Singapore and JB Sentral. A one-way ticket costs S$5 from Singapore or 5 MYR (~S$1.51) from JB, the ride takes 5 minutes, and there are 31 daily services total (13 SG → JB, 18 JB → SG). The RTS Link will launch in January 2027 as a faster, more frequent alternative, with a fare expected between S$5 and S$7.

Why Take the Train from Singapore to JB?

The train is the most predictable way across the Causeway, full stop. No matter how bad road traffic looks on a Saturday morning, the Shuttle Tebrau leaves on schedule. Here’s what makes it the smart pick:

  • It’s predictable. The train runs to a fixed timetable. Causeway road traffic doesn’t.
  • Immigration is built into the route. You clear Singapore immigration at Woodlands CIQ before you board, so the only thing left when you arrive is MY immigration at JB Sentral.
  • JB Sentral is a launchpad. You walk straight into City Square mall via a covered walkway. Komtar JBCC is a short walk. KSL City, Mid Valley Southkey and Paradigm Mall are a short Grab away.
  • It’s the cheapest cross-border option. S$5 one-way beats every Grab, cross-border coach and private hire.

What is the KTM Shuttle Tebrau?

The KTM Shuttle Tebrau is the direct cross-border commuter train run by Malaysia’s national rail operator, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB). It only stops at two stations:

  • Woodlands Train Checkpoint (Singapore): a separate CIQ building on Woodlands Centre Road. It’s not Woodlands MRT, and it’s not Woodlands Checkpoint, the road CIQ.
  • JB Sentral (Malaysia): directly connected to City Square mall via a covered walkway.

The ride itself takes around 5 minutes because the train only crosses the Causeway. Door-to-door usually lands at 30–45 minutes once you factor in immigration.

How Much Is The Train To JB? (2026 Prices)

The Shuttle Tebrau costs S$5 from Singapore or 5 MYR (~S$1.51) from JB. Fares haven’t changed in years and there are no concession rates. Here’s the full price table:

Route Non-Malaysian Malaysian
Singapore → JB Sentral S$5 5 MYR (~S$1.51)
JB Sentral → Singapore 5 MYR (~S$1.51) 5 MYR (~S$1.51)
Return (SG → JB → SG) S$5 + 5 MYR 10 MYR (~S$3.03)

A few things to know before you queue at the counter:

  • Children aged 4 and under ride free. Just register at the ticket counter before boarding.
  • There are no concession fares. Same price for adults, students, and seniors.
  • The Woodlands counter is KTM Wallet only. KTMB went fully cashless on 1 January 2025, so cash and bank cards aren’t accepted at the Singapore-side counter. Top up your KTM Wallet ahead, or book online instead. The JB Sentral counter still takes MYR cash and cards.

How Long Does The Train To JB Take?

The train ride itself is about 5 minutes. Door-to-door is 30–45 minutes once you factor in immigration and the walk to City Square. The flow:

  • Arrive 45 minutes before departure. KTMB’s official recommendation.
  • Clear Singapore immigration first. Done at Woodlands CIQ before you board.
  • Board the train. 5 minutes across the Causeway.
  • Clear Malaysian immigration at JB Sentral after disembarking.
  • Walk straight into City Square. A covered walkway connects the platform to the mall.

On a smooth day, you’re at the City Square Starbucks within an hour of leaving home.

Train To JB Schedule And Timings (2026)

The Shuttle Tebrau runs 31 daily services total, split as 13 SG → JB and 18 JB → SG. The split reflects heavier demand from JB commuters working in Singapore. KTMB and SLA have agreed in principle to raise the frequency to 36 daily trips, but no commencement date has been confirmed.

Singapore → JB (Woodlands → JB Sentral): 13 Daily Departures

There are three booking options. For weekends, public holidays and school holidays, book online ahead. Counter queues sell out the next departure fast.

Option 1: KTMB Website (shuttleonline.ktmb.com.my)

  • Register a free KTMB account.
  • Tickets open for sale 30 days before travel, at 8:30 AM SGT.
  • Download your e-ticket QR code. You’ll scan it at the platform gate.

Option 2: KTM MobTicket App

  • Same 30-day booking window.
  • Available on Android and iOS.
  • Best if you book regularly. Saves you digging through email for QR codes.

Option 3: Buy At The Station

  • Available at Woodlands and JB Sentral counters.
  • Closes 20 minutes before departure.
  • Remember: the Woodlands counter is KTM Wallet only. No cash. No bank cards.

Step By Step: Taking The KTM Train From SG To JB

If you’ve never done this before, here’s the flow end to end:

Step 1: Get To Woodlands Train Checkpoint

It’s a 7-minute walk from Woodlands MRT, or a S$10–15 Grab from town. This is not Woodlands Checkpoint (the road CIQ). They’re two different buildings about 5 minutes apart by car.

Step 2: Show Your Passport And E-Ticket At The Gate

Passport must have at least 6 months’ validity at the time of travel. The QR code on your e-ticket is what you’ll scan.

Step 3: Clear Singapore Immigration

Auto-gates are available for Singaporeans. Manual counters for everyone else.

Step 4: Wait In The Departure Lounge

Small, air-conditioned, a couple of vending machines. No food court, so eat before you arrive.

Step 5: Board The Train When Called

Free seating, first-come, first-sat. Standing is fine for a 5-minute ride.

Step 6: Disembark At JB Sentral

Follow the signs to “Malaysia Immigration”.

Step 7: Clear MY Immigration And Walk Through To City Square

Once cleared, the covered walkway drops you straight into the mall.

Onboard Experience: What To Expect

The Shuttle Tebrau is a functional commuter train, not a tourist experience. Here’s the honest version:

  • Air-conditioned coaches. Dress accordingly, it gets cold.
  • Free seating, no reservations. Expect to stand at peak times.
  • No food, drink or onboard sales.
  • Carry-on luggage only. Small suitcases kept at your feet. There’s no checked-bag system.
  • Charge your phone. You’ll need the e-ticket QR code at the platform gate.

JB ↔ KL ETS: The New Electric Train To Kuala Lumpur

The big news for 2026: the Electric Train Service (ETS) between JB Sentral and KL Sentral officially launched on 12 December 2025, finally connecting Johor directly to KL by rail without the awkward Gemas changeover. KTMB has since scaled the route from 4 launch services to 7 daily departures from KL Sentral.

train to jb: JB ↔ KL ETS

  • Route: JB Sentral ↔ Gemas ↔ KL Sentral (one continuous service).
  • Journey time: ~4.5 hours.
  • Frequency: 7 daily departures from KL Sentral as of Feb 2026 (first 7:55 AM, last 9:10 PM). First JB Sentral departure ~7:35 AM. ⚠ Verify the live KTMB timetable before booking. KTMB rescheduled late-night services from 18 April 2026.
  • Fares: Standard from ~33 MYR (~S$10), Platinum ~96–109 MYR (~S$29–33), Business from ~152 MYR (~S$46). Fares are dynamic; weekend and holiday services run higher.
  • Classes: Standard and Platinum on most services. Platinum includes free meals (curry chicken rice, popcorn, pastry snacks, guava juice and coffee), reclining seats, a footrest, WiFi, and power plugs.

If you’re heading from Singapore to KL by train, the route is: Shuttle Tebrau (Woodlands → JB Sentral), then ETS (JB Sentral → KL Sentral). Total journey time is about 5–5.5 hours, including the immigration buffer and platform changeover at JB Sentral.

Book ETS tickets through the KTMB website or KTM MobTicket app, same as the Shuttle Tebrau.

Onward from JB by rail: the KTMB network also connects you to Gemas, Seremban, KL, and (via transfers) Ipoh, Penang Butterworth, and the East Coast Line to Kelantan.

train to jb: RTS link

The Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is the long-awaited cross-border MRT-style line. As of April 2026, both governments have confirmed a January 2027 opening. Crucially, the RTS Link is set to replace the KTM Shuttle Tebrau by mid-2027, so if you’re planning longer-term, the Shuttle Tebrau era is winding down.

What to know:

  • Route: Woodlands North MRT (Thomson-East Coast Line terminus) ↔ Bukit Chagar (JB).
  • Journey time: 5 minutes.
  • Fare: Expected to land between S$5 and S$7 per one-way trip (~15.50–21.70 MYR). The final fare structure will be announced in the second half of 2026, ahead of the launch.
  • Capacity: Over 40,000 passengers daily at launch, rising to ~140,000 long-term. 10,000 passengers per hour per direction.
  • Frequency: A train every 3.6 minutes at peak.
  • Construction status: ~83% complete as of mid-2024. Trial running began end-2025. System integration testing continues through 2026.
  • Immigration: Co-located CIQ at both stations, independent from the existing CIQs. You clear immigration once at your departure station, then walk straight onto the platform.
  • Replacing the Shuttle Tebrau: the existing KTM Shuttle Tebrau service is set to be phased out by mid-2027 once the RTS Link is fully operational.

Why it matters: the RTS Link kills the Causeway as a daily commute pain point. For weekend trips, it’s faster than the Shuttle Tebrau because you’re stepping off an MRT, not walking into a separate CIQ building. And it runs far more frequently. Even at the upper end of the S$5–S$7 fare band, it works out cheaper than driving once you factor in Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fees, tolls and fuel.

Which Train To JB Should You Take?

A quick decision framework:

  • Going to JB for the day, today? → Shuttle Tebrau. Cheapest, fastest, runs 31 times a day. Book online so you don’t get stuck behind the KTM Wallet-only counter queue.
  • Going onward to KL? → Shuttle Tebrau, then ETS at JB Sentral. One platform change, ~5–5.5 hours end-to-end. Cheaper and more comfortable than the bus.
  • From January 2027 onwards? → RTS Link. No CIQ building, no 30-minute door-to-door buffer, trains every few minutes, fare in the S$5–S$7 range.
  • After mid-2027? → The Shuttle Tebrau is set to be retired. The RTS Link becomes the default cross-border train. Plan accordingly if you’re a frequent commuter.
  • Combining JB with a longer Malaysia trip? → For now: Shuttle Tebrau, then ETS at JB Sentral to KL, Ipoh, Butterworth, or East Coast Line to Kelantan. Post-mid-2027: RTS Link, then walk to JB Sentral for ETS.

For 2026 itself, the Shuttle Tebrau is still the workhorse. The ETS makes JB a viable rail gateway to the rest of Malaysia. The RTS Link changes the game in January 2027 and closes the Shuttle Tebrau chapter by mid-2027.

Travel Tips For The Train To JB

A few things that’ll save you time and money:

  • Book online ahead for weekends, public holidays and school holidays. The same-day counter sells out fast.
  • Top up your KTM Wallet before you arrive if you might buy at the Woodlands counter. It’s cashless only.
  • Pack a sweater. Coaches are over-air-conditioned.
  • Use Grab in JB, not the cab queue outside JB Sentral. Cheaper, metered, no haggling.
  • Pay smart in JB: YouTrip’s MYR wallet locks in the exchange rate when you top up, and there are no foreign transaction fees on swipes. For cash, withdraw from a Maybank ATM with your YouTrip card.
  • Match your immigration queue to the time of day. Friday evening SG → JB and Sunday evening JB → SG are the worst windows. Off-peak weekday mornings clear in 10 minutes.

FAQs About Taking The Train To JB

Q: Is there still a train from Singapore to JB?

Yes. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau runs 31 times a day between Woodlands Train Checkpoint and JB Sentral, with 13 services from Singapore and 18 from JB. The RTS Link will join it in January 2027 and is set to replace the Shuttle Tebrau by mid-2027.

Q: Is there a direct KTM train to JB?

Yes. The Shuttle Tebrau is the direct service from Singapore to JB Sentral, and the ride takes about 5 minutes. The new ETS service also runs from JB Sentral all the way to KL Sentral if you’re carrying on into Malaysia.

Q: Where in JB does the train stop?

At JB Sentral, directly above City Square mall. From there you can walk to City Square or Komtar JBCC, or take a Grab to KSL City, Mid Valley Southkey or Paradigm Mall. JB Sentral is also the platform for the ETS service onward to Gemas, Seremban and KL.

Q: How early should I check in for the train to JB?

KTMB officially recommends arriving 45 minutes before departure. Ticket sales close 20 minutes before departure, and the platform gate closes a few minutes before that. Arriving 45 minutes early gives you a buffer for the immigration queue.

Q: Can I cancel or refund my KTM ticket?

Cancellations are allowed up to a cut-off before departure, with the refund processed back to your KTM Wallet. Same-day no-shows aren’t refundable. The exact cut-off is shown on the KTMB website when you book, and varies slightly by service.

Q: Is the train to JB wheelchair-accessible?

Yes. Both Woodlands and JB Sentral have step-free access, and KTM staff can assist with boarding on request. The new RTS Link, when it opens in January 2027, will be fully step-free with platform-edge doors at both stations.

Q: Can I take luggage on the Shuttle Tebrau?

Carry-on only. There’s no checked-bag system on the Shuttle Tebrau. If you’re hauling a large suitcase to KL, you’ll have more luggage space onboard the ETS, where overhead racks and luggage compartments accommodate full-sized suitcases.

Q: What about the MRT to JB?

There isn’t one yet. The closest equivalent is the RTS Link, opening January 2027 from Woodlands North MRT (Thomson-East Coast Line terminus) to Bukit Chagar in JB. The 5-minute crossing runs every 3.6 minutes at peak.

Q: Will the KTM Shuttle Tebrau still run after the RTS Link opens?

Only for a short overlap. The RTS Link is set to replace the Shuttle Tebrau by mid-2027. After that, the RTS Link becomes the default cross-border train between Singapore and JB.

Q: How much will the RTS Link cost?

The fare is expected to land between S$5 and S$7 per one-way trip, roughly 15.50–21.70 MYR. The official fare structure will be announced in the second half of 2026, ahead of the January 2027 launch.

See you on the 9:45 to JB Sentral 🚆
