With this extension it gives Durant a total of three years and $144.7 on his current contract. Durant is currently 37 years old so he will be 40 years old when this deal is completed. Houston giving someone of Durant’s age this type of financial commitment is a reflection of their belief in this core’s ability to win a title, and also their urgency in reaching that goal as well. With this extension Durant is the all-time leader in revenue generated from NBA contracts, passing LeBron James in this category. Durant made his intention to retire in Houston public, and this deal all but guarantees that the two-time NBA champion and finals MVP will be ending his career with the Rockets. This extension gives the Rockets some security in their immediate future, and ensures that they will have multiple chances with Durant leading the charge. After their starting point guard Fred VanVleet went down with a torn ACL a few weeks ago which brought his availability this season into question, Houston made sure that Durant would be under contract during his eventual return. Two days before the NBA season tips off, the Houston Rockets and their star acquisition Kevin Durant have agreed to terms on a two-year $90 million extension per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Throughout the preseason we’ve gotten a small sample of what Houston will look like with Durant added and so far returns look good. They’ve been running their offense through All-Star center Alperen Sengun who is a strong passer, and he has been distributing the ball well. Durant’s off-ball movement makes him a seamless fit in an offense where Sengun, a willing passer, is the hub. Even with Sengun being an initiator, Durant will still have to perform as a playmaker, and make sure that Houston’s offense can be run through him at times as well.

The Houston Rockets first test comes against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, October 21st.
