Blockchain News: Vitalik Cautions on Off-Chain Dangers Despite Blockchain Security

Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin warns blockchain security ends off-chain, urging developers to address risks in bridges, L2s, and AI-driven centralization.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin issued a strong warning recently. He addressed the limits of blockchain security effectively. Buterin stated that guarantees for the core protocol end on the chain. This difference now provides important new avenues for vulnerability.

Buterin Highlights Risks in Cross-Chain Bridges and L2 Complexity

A blockchain has one important security property. Specifically, an invalid block cannot be made valid by a 51% attack. This protects users from theft of assets by colluding validators. So this protection is strong and reliable, from within the organization. However, this protection is not available for off-chain trust situations. Thus, there are no remedies for the users in case of any external collusion of validators.

Furthermore, cross-chain bridges were threatened by Buterin. Now these bridges are susceptible to a 51% attack. He pointed out that an attack would lead to a contagion of the whole system. It is therefore more dangerous the more chains are linked. This is because there is a lot of shared risk in the bridge structure.

Furthermore, he was worried about L2 networks. He mentioned how these solutions are becoming more complex. This complexity brings with it a lot of attendant risk in general. To remedy this, he proposed enhanced L1 constructs. These attributes could be utilized to make L2s simpler and safer.

In addition to this, he brought up the fact of weak proof systems. Now, these flaws exist in current L2 implementations. Buterin has a point that L2s have to tread carefully. In particular, they require a strong technical protection to begin with. As a result, they can safely achieve ultimate decentralization.

For example, dependencies are introduced by using off-chain data storage. Another approach is an off-chain storage of data. Although this makes things more scalable and loads are reduced, risks are not abated. The security is based on the hashing and encryption algorithms. These cryptographic techniques tend to be difficult to implement. Therefore, there are more security risks in the outside main chain.

Vitalik Warns AI and Centralization Threaten Blockchain Security

Recently, the Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin outlined practical “tests” for projects. One test is the “walk-away test.” This assesses what would happen if the parent company were to dissolve. Another is the “insider attack test.” This is used to assess damage by rogue team members. He warned that many systems have hidden backdoors.

These flaws have a wide range of applications. This can frequently involve L2s and DeFi FRONT-ENDs. In addition, they have insecure interfaces for access. This inbuilt centralization erodes fundamental trust. Thus, the user is vulnerable to operational risk. Therefore, project developers have to remove these weaknesses. Only in this way can we have true decentralization.

In a September 2025 blog post, Buterin was averse to digital addiction. He said that dependence now can erode public trust. Therefore, technologies have to be open, foundation-based. This provides transparency and verifiability to users. He made the point that relying on private tech has a high centralization of power.

In addition, he pointed out that AI can become dangerous. These risks have to be dealt with correctly by developers. Finally, concentration of power has to be obviated altogether. This basic principle encompasses users all over the world. Therefore, the drive for open source infrastructure is important. This creates a good sense of trust and wide participation.

In conclusion, the message of Buterin is clear and explicit. Blockchain does an effective job of preventing protocol-level theft. However, it cannot avoid the external collusion and failure. The industry needs to focus on reducing off-chain trust assumptions at this point. Therefore, developers have to implement core security concepts broadly. This vigilance is needed to ensure ecosystem integrity and user safety.

China Blocks Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D as Local Chips Rise

The post China Blocks Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D as Local Chips Rise appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. China Blocks Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D as Local Chips Rise China’s internet regulator has ordered the country’s biggest technology firms, including Alibaba and ByteDance, to stop purchasing Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D GPUs. According to the Financial Times, the move shuts down the last major channel for mass supplies of American chips to the Chinese market. Why Beijing Halted Nvidia Purchases Chinese companies had planned to buy tens of thousands of RTX Pro 6000D accelerators and had already begun testing them in servers. But regulators intervened, halting the purchases and signaling stricter controls than earlier measures placed on Nvidia’s H20 chip. Image: Nvidia An audit compared Huawei and Cambricon processors, along with chips developed by Alibaba and Baidu, against Nvidia’s export-approved products. Regulators concluded that Chinese chips had reached performance levels comparable to the restricted U.S. models. This assessment pushed authorities to advise firms to rely more heavily on domestic processors, further tightening Nvidia’s already limited position in China. China’s Drive Toward Tech Independence The decision highlights Beijing’s focus on import substitution — developing self-sufficient chip production to reduce reliance on U.S. supplies. “The signal is now clear: all attention is focused on building a domestic ecosystem,” said a representative of a leading Chinese tech company. Nvidia had unveiled the RTX Pro 6000D in July 2025 during CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to Beijing, in an attempt to keep a foothold in China after Washington restricted exports of its most advanced chips. But momentum is shifting. Industry sources told the Financial Times that Chinese manufacturers plan to triple AI chip production next year to meet growing demand. They believe “domestic supply will now be sufficient without Nvidia.” What It Means for the Future With Huawei, Cambricon, Alibaba, and Baidu stepping up, China is positioning itself for long-term technological independence. Nvidia, meanwhile, faces…
