Malaysia Launches System to Help Crack Down on Crypto Power Theft

  • The Malaysian authorities have released a report regarding the widespread tampering of meters by crypto miners.
  • Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has sat up and put an enforcement system in place in order to deploy smart meters and also build an internal database that quickly detects suspicious power consumption.

The Malaysian authorities have carried out intense searches and coordinated raids after they discovered that a number of crypto mining operators were tampering with the electricity meter. According to officials, this has been going on for a while now, as many of these locations across the country have been involved in these illegal power connections since 2020.

These mining operators manipulated or bypassed their electricity meters so that they could run their machines without paying the high energy costs that are normally required for crypto mining.

How the Increase in Electricity Theft Threatens Malaysia’s Energy Stability

According to the national electric utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), it was revealed that the electricity company has lost more than one billion dollars within the last four years because of this growing problem of electricity theft. In fact, a recent document that was submitted to the parliament showed that almost 14,000 premises were caught using power illegally during this period.

Authorities explained that the rise of crypto mining, combined with the lack of strict regulations for the sector, has placed serious pressure on Malaysia’s energy system. And in order to tackle this problem and catch the perpetrators, the Energy and Water Transformation Ministry said it has increased its enforcement efforts and is now going to be working closely with TNB and other government agencies, including the police, communications regulator, and the anti-corruption commission.

Together, they would be able to have the authority to raid suspected sites and also seize mining machines that were powered through illegal connections. Making another step forward, the officials shared that TNB has created a new internal database that records ownership and tenancy details for locations suspected to be carrying out power theft. By doing this, investigators can track unusual electricity use and identify operators who try to hide their activities.

In addition, TNB has already started installing smart meters at distribution points so it can monitor real-time electricity flows. These smart devices will allow the company to detect any unusual patterns faster and identify attempts to tamper with the system before major losses occur.

The ministry also reminded the public that even though crypto mining has not been completely regulated in Malaysia, any attempt to bypass or damage electricity meters is a serious offense under the Electricity Supply Act.
