In his statement, Buterin noted that the key next steps in the development of private messengers should be:

• creating permissionless accounts;
• protecting user metadata.

In his opinion, these directions are what develop Session and SimpleX Chat, which is why he decided to support the teams financially.

At the same time, Buterin noted that both messengers are still far from perfection and must overcome a number of important challenges. Among them, he mentioned the difficulty of building decentralized infrastructure, the need to ensure proper operation on multiple devices simultaneously, the risks of Sybil and DoS attacks, as well as the challenges associated with abandoning the linking of accounts to phone numbers.
