OQGN invites bids for Oman’s first carbon-capture pipeline

Oman’s state-controlled OQ Gas Networks (OQGN) has invited bids for the construction of a 800km carbon waste pipeline.

The pipeline project, which will be the first to be built in the country, will include multiple storage and processing units that will run through the three free zones of Sohar, Duqm and Salalah.

The free zones hold the largest industries in the country, including ports, refineries, power plants and minerals projects.

“The pipeline is part of our net zero objectives for the cleaner environment by removing CO2 from exhaust systems and lower carbon intensity in the air we breathe,” OQGN’s statement to AGBI said.

Analysts welcomed the pipeline, saying Oman needs more carbon capture infrastructure as the sultanate accelerates its pace to build mega projects across the country.

“It is about time Oman has carbon capture facilities with all these projects being built or under plan, otherwise it will have serious problems achieving its carbon free environment targets,” Ahmed Al Mahrooki, a member of Environment Society of Oman, said.

OQGN’s parent company OQ has multiple projects under construction and expects its portfolio to exceed 30 gigawatts by 2030.

Oman has set a target of 2050 to reach net zero carbon emissions. It aims to reduce emissions 21 percent by 2030 from the 2020 baseline, and to produce one million tonnes of green hydrogen.
