One of the most innovative methods I’ve used to measure the impact of software implementation on productivity was introducing a “time-to-value delta” metric.

Instead of looking at abstract efficiency, we measured the duration from task start to successful completion. We measured this before and after the software implementation.

How it worked: We tracked the average time for completing typical tasks; the number of iterations required to achieve the result; and the percentage of tasks that reached a final result without rollbacks.

After the software was implemented, we compared the “delta”: how much faster the team converted actions into value. If the software genuinely helped, the delta decreased. If it didn’t, we rejected, even if the interface was user-friendly. If the time-to-value didn’t drop by at least 30%, it made no financial sense to proceed with the implementation.

If the drop was greater, we scaled it up, trained the team, and automated the surrounding processes.

I would advise measuring value, not the process. Most people look at clicks, loading speed, and convenience. I look at one thing: how much faster the business receives money/results after implementation.

Here’s what works better:

1. Measure all basics first. For 2 to 3 weeks, track how long a task takes before the new software and after.

2. For about one month, run a short weekly survey. Ask: “Is this software making your job easier or harder?”

3. Watch for hidden costs. Look at time wasted on extra or unnecessary steps used to work around software issues.

Feelings often show problems that numbers miss. If work is faster but everyone feels frustrated … “Productivity has not really improved.”

My tip is simple. Measure both speed and satisfaction. Real productivity means people do more work and feel good while doing it.
