MANILA, Philippines – MLV-Zamboanga Valientes ended their stint in the 35th Dubai International Basketball Championship on a high note, stunning defending champion Sports Club Beirut, 83-72, on Wednesday, January 28 (Thursday, January 29, Philippine time) at Al Nasr Club’s Sheik Rashid Bin Hamdan Hall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Powered by the towering Sam Deguara and back-in-form Terrence Romeo, the Valientes surged ahead, 61-49, late in the third quarter, then fended off the Lebanese’s repeated rallies to tally their first and only win after three losses in the 10-team, six-nation tournament.

The 7-foot-6 Deguara posted 21 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, while Romeo — a three-time PBA scoring champion — notched 20 points, including 4 triples, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds to prevent a winless campaign for the Valientes.

Former top NBA draftee Anthony Bennett also delivered with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist, and so did 2023 UAAP MVP Malick Diouf (8 points and 7 rebounds) and Zamboangueño Bryan Manuel (8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists).

Greg Slaughter, Vic Manuel, and Kevin Ebona contributed 4 points each for the Valientes, who bettered their 0-4 showing in last year’s contest.

Zamboangueño Forthsky Padrigao, the Valientes’ top scorer with 25 points in their 103-110 setback to Libya’s Al Ahli Tripoli the day prior, was held scoreless this time.

With the 6-foot-11 Diouf and the 6-foot-8 Bennett clogging the lane, the Valientes erected a decisive 56-29 edge off the boards, compensating for the 22 turnovers they committed.

Zamboanga team owner Junnie Navarro believes the Valientes could have done better had they not had limited time to jell and get into shape.

Sports Club Beirut, which dropped to 2-2 in Group B, drew 19 points and 14 points, respectively, from American reinforcements Albert James English and Traevon Jackson.

Club Africain of Tunisia and Al-Ahly Tripoli topped Group B with 3-1 records. The UAE national team swept Group A with a 4-0 card.

The Valientes lost to Club Africain, 77-96, in the opener on Monday, January 26, and to Syria’s Al-Karamah, 92-90, in overtime on Tuesday, January 27. – Rappler.com

Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC

The post Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson has weighed in on whether the Federal Reserve should make a 25 basis points (bps) Fed rate cut or 50 bps cut. This comes ahead of the Fed decision today at today’s FOMC meeting, with the market pricing in a 25 bps cut. Bitcoin and the broader crypto market are currently trading flat ahead of the rate cut decision. Franklin Templeton CEO Weighs In On Potential FOMC Decision In a CNBC interview, Jenny Johnson said that she expects the Fed to make a 25 bps cut today instead of a 50 bps cut. She acknowledged the jobs data, which suggested that the labor market is weakening. However, she noted that this data is backward-looking, indicating that it doesn’t show the current state of the economy. She alluded to the wage growth, which she remarked is an indication of a robust labor market. She added that retail sales are up and that consumers are still spending, despite inflation being sticky at 3%, which makes a case for why the FOMC should opt against a 50-basis-point Fed rate cut. In line with this, the Franklin Templeton CEO said that she would go with a 25 bps rate cut if she were Jerome Powell. She remarked that the Fed still has the October and December FOMC meetings to make further cuts if the incoming data warrants it. Johnson also asserted that the data show a robust economy. However, she noted that there can’t be an argument for no Fed rate cut since Powell already signaled at Jackson Hole that they were likely to lower interest rates at this meeting due to concerns over a weakening labor market. Notably, her comment comes as experts argue for both sides on why the Fed should make a 25 bps cut or…
