French Cops Nab Six in Crypto Kidnap Case

French authorities have detained six suspects, including a minor, in connection with the kidnapping of a 35-year-old magistrate and her 67-year-old mother, which was reportedly part of a cryptocurrency ransom scheme. The victims, however, escaped by making noise that alerted a neighbor, who opened the garage door and aided their release on Friday morning.

Local media reports that no payment was made for their release, but threats of mutilation loomed large in this latest incident. The case fits into a trend of attacks involving physical coercion in France’s crypto sector.

The Abduction and Dramatic Escape

French police provided details about the kidnapping, which took place overnight from Wednesday to Thursday in Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux, located near Grenoble. At around 3 a.m. on Thursday, masked kidnappers forced their way into the home of the magistrate. Then, they abducted her along with her 67-year-old mother.

The two women were taken to a garage in Bourg-les-Valence, about 100 kilometers away, where they were held for approximately 30 hours. During this time, the kidnappers reached out to the magistrate’s partner, a high-profile figure in a crypto start-up, demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency and making threats to mutilate the women if the payment was delayed. 

Lyon public prosecutor Thierry Dran later confirmed these chilling details, revealing that the magistrate had suffered injuries, including head wounds. Fortunately, the captives attracted attention by banging on the garage door, which alerted a neighbor who came to their aid and freed them on Friday morning.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Following the partner’s alert, the French police immediately launched a large-scale search involving 160 officers, which resulted in rapid arrests. Three suspects were detained overnight following the victims’ discovery, with two more apprehended Sunday morning while attempting to board a bus to Spain. The sixth, a minor, was arrested Sunday afternoon. 

Interrogations are underway to establish the suspects’ motives and possible connections to the magistrate’s professional or personal life. While authorities continue to search for additional accomplices in the Drôme region, no formal charges have, however, been filed yet, as evidence is still being collected.

Meanwhile, this recent incident adds to a worrying trend of high-profile cases, including the 2025 abduction of Ledger’s co-founder, which involved threats of mutilation. French officials have raised alarms about the growing violence linked to the crypto sector and are calling for increased security measures for individuals working in this area.
