Republicans audibly groaned when Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) asked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons if he thought he was going to Hell.
There was a contentious hearing about ICE accountability on Tuesday, in which lawmakers hammered officials on whether there were investigations into violent actions by federal agents and if anyone has been fired over the shooting deaths of two protestors in Minneapolis.
At one point, McIver, a Baptist who has immense support from faith leaders in her district, asked Lyons whether he was a person of faith.
"How do you think Judgment Day will go for you with so much blood on your hands?" she asked.
"I'm not going to entertain that question," Lyons said.
She followed with the question, "Do you think you're going to hell, Mr. Lyons?"
Fox News congressional correspondent Bill Melugin reported "groans from the audience in the room."
