TLDR

  • Samsung shares jumped 5.4% to a record 190,900 won Thursday after a report said HBM4 chips are being priced at ~$700 per unit.
  • The $700 price is 20%–30% higher than its previous HBM3E model.
  • Bloomberg Intelligence estimates HBM4 carries an operating profit margin of 50%–60%.
  • Samsung began HBM4 mass production last week and has already shipped to customers.
  • Rival SK Hynix may raise its own HBM4 prices to match Samsung’s higher figure.

Samsung shares hit a fresh record Thursday after South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported the company is negotiating prices for its HBM4 AI memory chips at around $700 per unit.

That figure is 20% to 30% above what Samsung charged for its previous HBM3E chips. The stock climbed as much as 5.4% on the Korea Exchange to 190,900 won, as markets reopened after a three-day holiday. Samsung declined to comment on the report.

The $700 price tag implies an operating profit margin of 50% to 60% on HBM4, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Masahiro Wakasugi — a solid leap from what the company was earning on its prior generation chips.

Pricing Power Returns

Samsung had fallen behind rival SK Hynix in the early days of the AI memory race. But last week the company said it started mass production of HBM4 chips and had already shipped commercial products to customers — a faster ramp than many expected.

SK Hynix had priced its own HBM4 chips for Nvidia in the mid-$500 range back in August. Chosun Ilbo reported, citing unnamed industry sources, that SK Hynix may now move to match Samsung’s higher number.

What It Means for Margins

If Samsung supplies more HBM chips to Nvidia, Wakasugi noted, those prices should be higher than what it charges other customers. That would narrow the average selling price gap between Samsung and SK Hynix in 2026.

SK Hynix shares also gained Thursday, rising 1.59% on the Korea Exchange.

South Korea’s broader Kospi index has surged 34% so far this year, making it the world’s best-performing stock market. Samsung and SK Hynix have been key drivers of that move.

Nvidia and Meta Add to the Tailwinds

Samsung customer Nvidia got a boost Wednesday after Meta Platforms agreed to deploy millions of its AI processors over the next few years — keeping demand for premium AI memory chips strong heading into the rest of 2026.

Samsung’s HBM4 mass production started last week, with commercial shipments already underway.

(Photo by Alika Jenner/Getty Images) Getty Images INDIANAPOLIS – While the Indiana Pacers free agency period has slowed significantly – all they have done since their July 24 two-way agreement with Taelon Peter is sign Jalen Slawson to an Exhibit 10 deal – they still have two contract negotiations to consider before the season starts. Guard Bennedict Mathurin as well as wing Aaron Nesmith are both eligible for a contract extension this offseason, and they both have drastically different considerations guiding financial dialogue with the team. Mathurin is eligible for a rookie-scale extension until October 20. Nesmith, meanwhile, could sign a veteran extension this offseason, and his agreement has the same deadline. Once the regular season arrives, both players won’t be able to sign any new deals until next summer. There is a time restriction. Both Nesmith and Mathurin are talented and relatively young. In theory, that’s the type of player a team would want to keep – but things are never that simple. The Pacers are currently under the luxury tax and project to be about $20-26 shy of that threshold next season, then $70-79 below it in 2027-28 – the year Nesmith’s extension would kick in. A lot can change for a team’s roster and salary outlook, so those numbers may not end up being relevant. But that flexibility is a part of the story when it comes to the Pacers extension negotiations with both players – and the salary chatter for both projects to be different. “Yeah,…
