Ethereum’s direction shifted sharply this week after fresh remarks from co-founder Vitalik Buterin signaled a deeper structural transformation. His comments followed a debate on X about whether Ethereum should fragment and rebuild from scratch. Instead, according to Buterin, he plans something more ambitious and tightly integrated.

He said he aims to build a “cypherpunk principled non-ugly Ethereum” as a bolt-on to the current system. Moreover, he stressed that this approach would remain interoperable with the existing network. That integration would allow gradual expansion while reinforcing core properties across the base layer.

According to his response on X, Ethereum must strengthen its censorship resistance, zk-prover compatibility, and consensus design at the system-wide level. Consequently, recent protocol decisions now align more clearly with that objective. His remarks place current technical upgrades within a broader ideological framework.

FOCIL and Account Abstraction Anchor Hardening Push

Developers recently scheduled Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists for the Hegota hard fork. This upgrade follows the upcoming Glamsterdam fork planned in the coming months. Entered as EIP-7805, FOCIL aims to guarantee transaction inclusion at the consensus layer.

The mechanism allows validator committees to enforce inclusion lists through fork-choice rules. Therefore, blocks that exclude valid public mempool transactions risk rejection by the chain. This design includes transactions that may conflict with OFAC sanctions rules.

Critics argue FOCIL could increase complexity and expose validators to legal scrutiny. However, Ethereum developers placed it at the center of Hegota’s roadmap. That decision reflects a renewed emphasis on protocol-level censorship resistance.

In another post, according to Buterin, FOCIL complements EIP-8141, which introduces native account abstraction. This proposal would enable smart wallets, multisig accounts, and quantum-resistant keys without wrappers. Additionally, users could submit privacy transactions directly through the public mempool.

These upgrades support the Ethereum Foundation’s 2026 priorities of scaling, simplifying, and hardening Layer 1. Significantly, this marks a pivot from an exclusively rollup-centric roadmap. Buterin recently acknowledged that Ethereum must also reinforce its base layer.

Lean Architecture and Execution Layer Overhaul

Beyond Hegota, Buterin has promoted a leaner architecture designed to reduce structural complexity. That includes Beam Chain concepts that embed ZK verification directly into Layer 1 validation. Furthermore, developers have explored replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V.

RISC-V would expand programming language support and improve zk compatibility. Hence, Ethereum could modernize execution without abandoning its existing ecosystem. Competition from chains like Solana has intensified pressure to accelerate these changes.

Buterin argued that Ethereum already executed major in-flight upgrades such as the Merge. Consequently, he expressed confidence the network can implement several more structural transitions.

Conclusion

Buterin’s proposal reframes Ethereum’s evolution as both technical and philosophical. By integrating censorship resistance, account abstraction, and execution redesign, he positions the network for deeper structural hardening while maintaining continuity with its existing foundation.
