The New York Yankees are set to open the season with a familiar cast of characters.

After the team fell to the eventual pennant-winning Toronto Blue Jays in an American League Division Series last year, there were some calls for a significant roster shakeup. Instead, the team forged reunions with Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, and will be hoping for some better health from their veteran core to fuel a deeper run.

And one key area of the roster can’t be much worse than it was last season.

After debuting with a Gold Glove winning rookie season, shortstop Anthony Volpe endured a brutal season at the plate and on defense, marking a harsh fall from grace after he was drafted in the first round by the Yankees in 2019.

“Volpe completed his third big league season in 2025, hitting 19 home runs while notching 18 stolen bases, but he batted just .212 with a .663 OPS,” Bryan Hoch wrote for MLB.com. “A Gold Glove Award winner in ’23, Volpe committed 19 errors in ’25, which tied for third-most in the Majors.”

Now the team will open the season with Jose Caballero as the everyday shortstop as Volpe attempts to return from a shoulder injury. And depending on how he looks early in the season, he could be moved out of an everyday role at his old position.

New York Yankees Shortstop Anthony Volpe Sends Concerning Message On Brutal Setback

As he works toward regaining full health and attempting to take back the position, Volpe was asked directly what happened to the first-round draft pick version of him and he offered a concerning four-word reply.

“I honestly don’t know,” Volpe said, per NJ.com’s Bob Klapisch.

Even though Volpe’s struggles last year can be attributed to his shoulder problem, the injury can’t explain why he has seemingly regressed for two years in a row, rather than emerge as a key part of the Yankees’ World Series contention following his debut.

New York Yankees’ Anthony Volpe Responds To Negative Reactions From Fans

Volpe’s fall was so pronounced last year that he endured booing from the home crowd at Yankee Stadium.

“I know people really care. I want them to react,” Volpe said of the negative feedback, per Klapisch. “Obviously, I want them to cheer for me, but for them not to do or say anything is not what I’d want, either.”

If Volpe can’t demonstrate that the injury is behind and he’s ready to realize the promise he once showed as a prospect, then he might be hearing some similar reactions next season.
