Have you ever seen a striking illustration or a beautifully crafted brand design online and immediately assumed it was created by some tech bro sitting behind multiple screens somewhere?
Or perhaps you have been scrolling through the Chowdeck app, noticing the playful visuals and thoughtful design that make the experience feel effortless, without really thinking about the creative mind behind it.
What many people don’t realise is that behind some of these visual experiences are women quietly shaping the identity of Nigeria’s growing tech products.
As conversations around women in tech in a significant month of March for women, we have seen more women stepping into the design space by using illustration, brand storytelling and product visuals to influence how technology looks, feels and connects with people. Rukhayat Orekoya is one of them.
She is a brand designer and illustrator at Chowdeck, one of Nigeria’s fast-rising logistics and food delivery platforms. Her experience spans across industries from fintech to healthcare and now logistics.
However, when she is not shaping the world using visuals, she spends time creating content (Fashion journalism), watching an animated series or doing personal art projects.
Rukhayat represents a new generation of women in tech who are redefining how African technology companies communicate, connect with users, and build memorable digital brands through design.

My gadget setup is pretty simple. I have a laptop and an iPad. The bulk of my work is done on my laptop, editing, design, communication, etc., while my iPad is used for doing research, making sketches and drawing out my illustration concepts.

I scroll Pinterest and Behance, study design work I find really interesting, then step away to sit quietly and think. Some of my best ideas come from reflecting, observing, and letting my curiosity lead.

Travelling primarily between African countries, I’d focus on seamless travel across the continent and then on fixing Nigeria’s electricity crisis. Free movement and stable power are vital for daily life; creativity and innovation would also create opportunities for millions of people.
Emilie Liu. She was a visual designer at Google. I find her journey impressive. I’m especially inspired by women designers who work in companies that shape how the world moves, whether through technology, infrastructure, or digital platforms.

I can do anything I put my mind to. Anything. It reminds me that most limits are mental. With discipline, consistency, and belief in myself, I can stretch beyond fear and build the life I truly want.
Oluwatomiwa Idowu. She leads Communications and Social Media at Chowdeck. She’s the mind behind much of the brand’s copy, and I genuinely admire how she brings personality and warmth into tech communication.
