PANews reported on March 17 that, according to Bloomberg, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan stated that he would not consider any letters or phone messages filed on behalf of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), his mother. SBF's mother, Barbara Fried, had contacted the court requesting an extension to file documents, citing her son's inability to use word processing and access files while incarcerated. Judge Kaplan noted that while he understood Barbara Fried was the defendant's mother and a former Stanford Law School professor, she had no right to file documents or seek relief in this case.

The judge has voluntarily extended the deadline for SBF or his lawyers to request an extension to March 23, but made it clear that he will not accept any letters or phone messages from Barbara Fried. Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2023 for his role in the collapse of FTX, is currently serving his sentence. Last month, he filed a motion claiming new evidence and requesting a retrial.
