As organizations accelerate digital transformation, many engineering teams are discovering that their biggest obstacle is the legacy infrastructure they still depend on. According to Pegasystems, 68% of enterprise IT decision-makers say outdated platforms and applications are preventing their organizations from fully adopting modern technologies. To better understand how engineering teams can overcome these challenges in practice, we spoke with Abduaziz Abdukhalimov, an award-winning senior full-stack developer with over a decade of experience in turning technically fragile systems into scalable, resilient platforms.

Abduaziz created methods to modernize legacy Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and financial systems at SoftClub Company by transforming them into modular microservices. At Barso LLC, he developed a cloud-native enterprise platform serving 100,000+ users. He also led the deployment of a national Moodle-based learning platform in Uzbekistan, enabling students and teachers to work online through a system that required stable performance, reliable releases, and fast but safe iteration. In our conversation with Abdukhalimov, we discussed what it takes to modernize legacy platforms, how engineering teams can scale enterprise systems without compromising system reliability and maintainability, and why architectural discipline often matters more than the choice of technology.

Abduaziz, today, many companies are under pressure to modernize core systems. From your perspective, what is the biggest mistake teams make when they begin modernizing a legacy platform?

The biggest mistake is treating modernization as a technology upgrade instead of a business-critical architecture decision. Many teams start with the idea that they simply need to move from a monolith to microservices, or from on-premises infrastructure to containers, without first understanding where the real operational pain points lie.

In practice, legacy systems usually fail under change before they fail under scale. The issue is often not that the platform cannot run, but that every new feature, fix, or integration becomes slower, riskier, and harder to test. If a team starts modernization by focusing only on tools, they can end up rebuilding the same problems in a more distributed form.

The better starting point is to identify where the current system creates the most friction: release bottlenecks, tightly coupled modules, unstable dependencies, or areas where performance and maintainability are already in conflict. Once those pressure points are clear, modernization becomes more disciplined. It stops being a vague migration effort and becomes a sequence of targeted engineering decisions.

You placed first in the Open Data Challenge and received a top ranking in the Best Soft Challenge early in your career. How did those experiences shape the way you approach large-scale engineering problems later on?

Competing at that stage of my career helped me build the habit of thinking beyond a quick technical fix. I learned to look at how a solution would hold up as complexity increased, as more people depended on it, and as the system had to keep evolving. That perspective stayed with me in professional work. Instead of focusing on what is trendy, I first look at whether a system is clearly structured, whether it can be supported without constant friction, and whether it will remain reliable as demands grow.

At SoftClub Company, you worked on enterprise modernization and helped migrate legacy ERP, financial, and HR systems to modular microservices. Your work led to more scalable enterprise applications, improved maintainability, and wider cloud adoption. How do you determine whether a monolith should still be refactored incrementally?

That experience taught me that the decision depends on whether the existing system can still be separated into meaningful modules without breaking the business logic. The main challenge is usually not age alone. It is the density of dependencies built up over time.

If the system still allows you to isolate functional areas, stabilize interfaces between them, and improve one part without constantly disturbing the rest, then incremental refactoring is usually the stronger path. That approach is especially useful when the platform is business-critical and cannot tolerate the delivery risk of replacing everything at once. A full rewrite becomes more realistic when the architecture no longer supports clean boundaries, when one change keeps cascading across unrelated areas, and when maintainability continues to decline even after targeted improvements. In that situation, the system stops responding to modernization as a sequence of controlled steps.

So the real test is not whether the monolith is old. It is whether it still gives the engineering team enough structural control to improve scalability and maintainability in parts. If that control is still there, refactoring works. If it is gone, rewriting becomes the safer long-term decision.

As a Senior Full-Stack Developer at Barso LLC, you helped build a cloud-native enterprise platform, which improved system performance by 40%. Based on that experience, what silent performance killers do you see most often in a Spring Boot environment?

Many performance problems are not caused by algorithms but by architecture decisions.

One common issue is hidden blocking operations. A service may appear asynchronous but still rely on blocking database calls or external APIs. Under heavy traffic, these calls consume thread pools, causing cascading delays. Another frequent problem is excessive inter-service communication. Microservices sometimes become too chatty, with multiple synchronous calls inside a single user request. Even a small latency in each call accumulates quickly. Database access patterns also matter. Inefficient queries, missing indexes, or excessive ORM usage can create bottlenecks that only appear under production load. Finally, observability is often underestimated. Without proper metrics and tracing, teams struggle to identify which component actually causes performance degradation. Performance engineering starts with visibility.

You developed an event-driven architecture using Apache Kafka and RabbitMQ to support a platform serving more than 100,000 active users, improving scalability, fault tolerance, and system reliability. In your experience, under what circumstances does event-driven architecture genuinely strengthen resilience and scalability?

Event-driven systems are powerful when services must remain loosely coupled yet exchange critical information. For example, if multiple subsystems depend on the same event, such as a financial transaction or user activity, publishing that event to a message broker allows each service to process it independently. This reduces direct dependencies between systems.

Another advantage is resilience. If a downstream service becomes temporarily unavailable, messages can be queued and processed later without losing data. However, event architecture should not be adopted blindly. For workflows that require immediate consistency or simple request-response logic, synchronous communication can be clearer and easier to maintain. The goal is not to maximize the number of technologies in the stack but to use asynchronous patterns where they genuinely improve fault tolerance and scalability.

You led the deployment of a Moodle-based e-learning platform across Uzbekistan, enabling universities to continue teaching remotely and earning recognition from the Ministry of Higher Education. When a platform suddenly needs to serve large numbers of students and teachers, how do engineering teams balance speed with reliability?

Situations like that force teams to prioritize stability and accessibility above perfect architecture.

One key principle is to focus on the critical user journey. For an educational platform, that means login, course access, and communication between students and teachers. Secondary features can be delayed if necessary. Infrastructure also becomes a priority. Rapid scaling requires reliable load balancing, database optimization, and careful monitoring to detect failures early.

Another lesson is that clear communication within the engineering team becomes as important as the code itself. When deployment cycles accelerate, coordination helps prevent conflicting changes that could destabilize the system. In high-pressure environments, engineering becomes the primary safeguard against chaos.

Throughout your career, you’ve worked on modernizing enterprise systems, building cloud-native platforms, and supporting high-load applications. Based on that progression, what does the term full-stack developer actually mean now?

What used to describe someone who handled client-side and server-side code now covers much more. The role increasingly involves seeing how a product functions end-to-end, from interface behavior and application logic to release workflows, system visibility, and performance after launch. A strong engineer in this space is not limited to coding alone. They also need to understand cloud environments, delivery pipelines, runtime behavior, and the operational side of software. The job has become broader and more connected to how technology performs in real business conditions.

After working on enterprise platforms that delivered measurable performance gains and supported large-scale operations, what practical advice would you give CTOs and engineering leaders on the first modernization decisions to make before a transformation programme becomes too large or too risky?

First, invest in observability before large architectural changes. Clear metrics, logs, and tracing help teams understand how the current system behaves and where improvements are most needed.

Second, redesign the deployment workflow early. Reliable CI/CD pipelines enable faster experimentation and reduce the fear of change.

Third, identify the right service boundaries based on business domains rather than technical modules. Clear ownership makes systems easier to maintain and scale.

When those foundations are in place, modernization becomes a structured process rather than a risky leap.
