UK bans crypto political donations and caps overseas funding at £100000 yearly to stop foreign influence and improve transparency in elections.

The United Kingdom government has announced an emergency ban on crypto donations to political parties. The rule will remain in place until proper regulations are established. According to the UK government statement, the move is to safeguard elections against giving them hidden foreign money and increase transparency in political funding.

UK Introduces Emergency Ban on Crypto Political Funding

Amendments to the Representation of the People Bill will include the new rule. Therefore, political parties are under an obligation to comply with the ban as soon as it is approved. The government said the decision follows recommendations from a review on election safety led by Philip Rycroft, which warned of risks to election safety.

According to The Guardian, Prime Minister Keir Starmer proposes more sweeping changes to political finance regulations. As a part of this plan, the donation of cryptocurrencies is stopped starting 25 March 2026. In addition, the government imposed an annual limit of 100,000l on donations by British citizens residing outside the country.

Officials explained digital currencies sometimes can conceal the identity of donors. Because of this fear, the authorities are concerned that hostile countries may attempt to influence UK politics. The Rycroft report included threats from Russia, China, and Iran, as well as dangers posed by friendly countries like the United States.

The ban is also temporary, the government said. However, it is here to stay until some clear rules are developed by Parliament and the Electoral Commission. Lawmakers want a system in which all political donations are traceable and can be checked by regulators.

New Donation Cap and Return Rules Take Effect

Along with the crypto ban, the government also added strict restrictions on political funding from abroad. Donations from overseas voters will now be limited to a maximum of GBP100000 a year. This rule also includes loans and other regulated financial support provided to political parties.

The new law will be in effect from 25 March 2026 with retrospective effect. Therefore, those political parties that accepted crypto donations after this date will have to return the funds. Parties will have 30 days to pay the funds back once the law is passed.

The rule is set to have a greater impact on Reform UK than on other parties. The party is known to have accepted donations in cryptocurrencies in the past. Reports said the group received around $12000000 last year from investor Christopher Harborne, who is in support of digital assets.

The changes are necessary to prevent illegal funding and safeguard democracy, government officials said. They believe rigorous rules will minimize the risk of covert influence in elections. At the same time, additional recommendations from the Rycroft Review may be added at a later date.

For now, the ban is evidence that governments are starting to pay more attention to the use of cryptocurrencies in politics. As digital money continues to become more widely used, the need for many countries to create similar rules to keep elections fair and transparent will become necessary.
