MTN Fixed Wired services, primarily branded as MTN FibreX, now have a subscriber base of 110,564, following a 24% increase in February 2026. This is also the first time the service will be crossing the 100,000 mark.

According to the latest industry data, MTN FibreX now holds an 88.7% share of Nigeria’s Fixed (Wired) subscribers, reflecting its continuous dominance since it rebranded from Fibre Broadband to FibreX.

The latest milestone follows a significant surge in subscribers following the April 2025 rebranding.

Between April 2025 and February 2026, industry data indicate that the service added over 95,000 users, representing an impressive 639% increase for a service that had ranged between 2,000 and 9,000 users in the preceding two years.

MTN dismisses the 100 customers' requirement claim for FibreX rollout

The reason behind the surge is not far-fetched.

MTN FibreX, the Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband network, has received significant interest from internet subscribers. This comes amid the need for high-speed data to complement easy downloading and uploading of large files.

FibreX promises users speeds of up to 1Gbps, unlimited data and ultra‑low latency for gaming, cloud, work‑from‑home and smart home devices.

With 110,546 subscribers, MTN FibreX leads the market, which also includes players such as 21st Century, ipNX, ING Digital, Big Picture, and SWIFTNG. Breakdown shows that the 21st Century has 81 subscribers while SWIFTNG has 13,945 subscribers.

MTN’s connectivity target with FibreX

In order to connect more Nigerians to the internet, MTN had planned to onboard over 8 million homes by 2028. This is further backed by the recognition that broadband connectivity is the backbone of Nigeria’s digital transformation.

The telco’s broadband push aligns with the Federal Government’s National Broadband Plan and Digital Economy Policy, which also constitutes the 90,000 km fibre-optic layout nationwide (Project Bridge).

In addition, it also aligns with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020–2025, which aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025. While the target wasn’t met, it currently holds a 53.86% with over 116,000 subscriptions.

The initiative seeks to reinforce the claim that every kilometre of fibre laid contributes to Nigeria’s economic resilience and competitiveness.

In its own way of achieving the ambition, MTN plans to expand FibreX to reach more locations and cities.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Broadband Officer (CBO), Egerton Idehen, in a conversation with Technext weeks ago, highlighted the expansion project, which includes a short-term plan of expanding availability to new communities and deepening coverage in existing FibreX locations. This will ensure seamless and faster activations for new customers.

In the long-term plan, he noted that the goal is to help Nigeria achieve its broadband objective: accelerate Nigeria’s digital progress by strengthening nationwide fibre infrastructure.
