Liquid Staking Derivatives Explained: stETH, rETH and JitoSOL

Liquid staking derivatives let proof-of-stake investors earn network rewards while keeping a transferable token that can still move through the crypto market. The best-known examples include stETH, rETH and JitoSOL. They solve the same basic problem, but they do not account for rewards, handle redemptions or absorb risk in exactly the same way.

That distinction matters more than the advertised yield. A liquid staking token is not simply the original asset with interest attached. It is a separate on-chain claim whose value depends on the underlying stake, protocol rules, validator performance and available liquidity. The MEXC liquid staking guide explains the basic mechanism and the main risk categories.

LSD and LST Describe the Same Core Idea

The abbreviation LSD, or liquid staking derivative, remains widely used. LST, meaning liquid staking token, is usually the clearer term. These assets are not conventional futures or options contracts. They are tokenized claims on cryptocurrency committed to a staking protocol, together with some form of claim on the rewards generated by that stake.

A user deposits a proof-of-stake asset into a liquid staking protocol and receives an LST in return. The protocol delegates or operates the underlying stake, while the LST can be transferred, traded or used in supported DeFi applications. This creates capital efficiency, but it also replaces one direct staking position with several connected exposures.

stETH, rETH and JitoSOL Do Not Pay Rewards the Same Way

stETH uses a rebasing model. Its holder balance is normally adjusted when protocol accounting reports are applied, so rewards appear as an increase in the number of stETH tokens held. Lido documentation also notes that validator penalties can reduce the amount represented by the token. Wrapped stETH, or wstETH, keeps a fixed token balance while its value relative to stETH changes instead.

rETH follows an exchange-rate model. The number of rETH tokens in a wallet does not need to rise for rewards to accrue. Instead, the protocol updates how much ETH each rETH represents as staking rewards, priority fees and eligible MEV rewards accumulate. Direct redemption also depends on sufficient ETH being available in the protocol’s deposit pool, which means the on-chain redemption route and the secondary-market price can behave differently during stressed conditions.

JitoSOL is a Solana liquid staking token whose value accrual includes staking rewards and MEV-related rewards generated through the Jito system. It can be redeemed through available protocol routes, but some withdrawal paths may involve Solana’s stake-deactivation process. In practice, users should distinguish between an immediate market sale and redemption of the underlying stake.

Liquidity Does Not Remove Staking Risk

The word “liquid” can be misleading. It means the position is represented by a transferable token; it does not guarantee instant redemption at the expected value. If sellers overwhelm available liquidity, an LST can trade below the value of the asset it represents. A temporary discount may disappear when redemption is available, but it can still force losses on leveraged traders or anyone who must exit immediately.

Using an LST as collateral introduces another layer of risk. The holder is exposed not only to the price of the base asset, but also to smart contracts, validator performance, oracle design, protocol governance and liquidation rules in the lending market. Reusing the same LST across several DeFi positions can turn a small depeg into a larger cascade of forced selling.

The MEXC View: Start With the Claim, Not the APY

MEXC’s view is that comparing liquid staking derivatives by headline yield alone misses the most important question: what exactly can the token holder claim, and how can that claim be converted back into the underlying asset during market stress? Before using an LST, investors should understand its reward-accounting method, redemption route, validator and operator concentration, secondary-market depth and the consequences of using it as collateral. A slightly higher yield may not compensate for weaker liquidity or a more complicated exit.

FAQ

What is a liquid staking derivative?

It is a transferable token representing a claim on assets committed to proof-of-stake validation and, depending on the protocol, the rewards generated by those assets.

Is an LST guaranteed to stay equal to the underlying asset?

No. Market prices can move away from redemption value when liquidity becomes thin, risk perception changes or redemptions are delayed.

Do all liquid staking tokens increase in quantity?

No. Rebasing tokens may increase a holder’s balance, while exchange-rate tokens generally keep the balance unchanged and increase the amount of the underlying asset represented by each token.

Risk Warning

Liquid staking derivatives carry smart-contract, validator, slashing, depeg, liquidity and redemption risks. Using them in lending or leveraged strategies can amplify losses. Review the protocol’s current documentation and exit mechanics before committing funds. This article is for informational purposes and does not constitute investment advice.
