Why Are China A-Shares Falling?

China’s A-share market has continued to weaken, but the headline indices do not tell the whole story. This is mainly a sell-off in expensive technology and growth stocks, rather than an equal decline across every sector.

As of the October 14, 2026 close in China Standard Time, the Shanghai Composite fell 0.88% to 3,767.23. The Shenzhen Component dropped 1.97%, while the growth-heavy ChiNext Index and STAR 50 Index lost 3.10% and 3.29%, respectively.

The CSI 300 closed at 4,217.68, down 1.36% for the day, 5.86% over one month and 12.07% over three months. Its deeper decline shows that the current pressure is not simply a one-day reaction. The market has been lowering its expectations for highly valued stocks since the middle of the year.

Technology Stocks Are Driving More of the Decline

The sharpest pressure has appeared in artificial intelligence hardware, semiconductors, optical communications and other technology sectors that previously attracted concentrated speculative capital.

By October 13, the CSI Semiconductor Index had fallen more than 30% from its July peak, according to Reuters. This matters because technology stocks carry greater weight in the ChiNext and STAR markets than in the Shanghai Composite.

The difference between the indices therefore has a clear explanation. Banks, energy producers and other dividend-paying companies have provided some support to the Shanghai index, while the withdrawal of capital from technology stocks has placed heavier pressure on growth-focused benchmarks.

This is less about investors suddenly rejecting China’s technology strategy and more about valuation. When a popular sector has already priced in rapid earnings growth, even a modest reduction in expectations can cause a large price correction.

Economic Data Are Strong in Some Areas but Weak in Others

China’s recent data do not point to a simple economic collapse. Instead, they reveal an uneven recovery.

Official data showed that China’s September exports increased 36.3% year over year, while total imports and exports during the first nine months of 2026 rose 18.8%. The official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index also returned to expansion at 50.1 in September.

However, domestic demand remains less convincing. September consumer inflation was 0.9% year over year, while core inflation held at 1.0%. At the same time, producer prices increased 5.0%, partly because of higher oil and commodity costs.

That combination creates an uncomfortable earnings outlook. Companies may face rising input costs before consumer demand becomes strong enough to support higher selling prices. Export strength also does not automatically translate into higher valuations when investors remain concerned about domestic consumption and future trade friction.

Policy Support Has Not Yet Restored Earnings Confidence

China has introduced measures supporting housing, infrastructure financing and targeted lending. These actions reduce downside risks, but equity investors are now looking for evidence that policy support can improve company revenue and profits.

This distinction is important. Measures that stabilize the economy may stop conditions from becoming worse, but they do not necessarily produce an immediate earnings acceleration.

The market had previously priced in both policy support and strong growth from strategic industries. As those expectations became harder to exceed, investors began taking profits and moving toward lower-valuation sectors.

The result is a gradual repricing process rather than a single panic-driven event.

External Markets Are Adding Pressure to Growth Valuations

The correction in Chinese technology stocks is also part of a wider retreat from crowded AI and semiconductor trades across Asia.

Higher global bond yields increase the discount rate applied to future earnings, making expensive growth stocks less attractive. Elevated oil prices can add further pressure by raising manufacturing and transportation costs.

Investors are also watching U.S. inflation, Federal Reserve policy expectations and the dollar. If overseas yields remain high, capital may continue to favour cash, bonds and defensive shares over technology companies whose valuations depend heavily on future growth.

These external factors do not fully explain the A-share decline, but they can amplify an existing domestic valuation adjustment.

MEXC View: Watch Market Breadth Before Calling a Bottom

MEXC’s view is that the most useful signal is not whether the Shanghai Composite records one positive session. Investors should watch whether selling pressure stops spreading across individual stocks.

On October 14, only about 980 mainland-listed stocks advanced while roughly 4,500 declined. Combined Shanghai and Shenzhen turnover fell to approximately RMB 1.41 trillion, down around RMB 261.5 billion from the previous session.

Falling prices accompanied by lower turnover suggest that the market is not experiencing uncontrolled liquidation. However, they also show that buyers remain cautious.

A more durable recovery would likely require improving market breadth, stabilization in technology leaders and clearer evidence that policy support is feeding into corporate earnings. Until those conditions appear together, brief rebounds may represent position adjustments rather than the beginning of a broad rally.

FAQ

Why are A-shares falling now?

The main drivers are the correction in highly valued technology stocks, uneven domestic demand, uncertainty over corporate earnings and a less supportive global interest-rate environment.

Is China’s economy entering a sharp downturn?

The available data do not support that conclusion. Manufacturing and exports have improved, but domestic consumption and company pricing power remain uneven.

Why is ChiNext falling faster than the Shanghai Composite?

ChiNext has greater exposure to technology and growth companies. These stocks are more sensitive to valuation changes and rising bond yields, while banks and energy companies provide more support to the Shanghai Composite.

What could help A-shares recover?

Investors should watch for stronger earnings guidance, broader participation in market rebounds, stabilization in technology shares and clearer evidence that policy measures are supporting domestic demand.

Micron Q3 2026 Earnings Results: $41.46B Revenue Reprices the AI Memory Trade

Micron Technology reported record fiscal Q3 2026 earnings results, with revenue reaching $41.46 billion, up from $9.30 billion a year earlier, as demand for AI-related memory and storage continued to exceed supply. Non-GAAP diluted EPS rose to $25.11, while non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 84.9%. The company also guided for about $50 billion in fiscal Q4 revenue, plus or minus $1 billion. This is not ordinary earnings news because Micron is no longer being judged only as a cyclical DRAM and NAND supplier. The latest Micron results suggest the market is repricing memory as a strategic bottleneck in the AI infrastructure buildout. High-bandwidth memory, data-center DRAM, enterprise SSDs, and long-term customer supply agreements are reshaping how investors think about Micron’s role in the AI supply chain.

USDC MiCA: Is Europe Raising the Bar for Stablecoins?

USDC has moved into a new regulatory category in Europe. On October 14, 2026, the European Banking Authority classified USDC issued by Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS as a significant e-money token (EMT) under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Of the 45 EMTs notified under MiCA in the European Union, USDC is the first to receive this designation. The decision does not represent USDC's first authorization in Europe: Circle's French entity has already issued USDC and EURC under MiCA since 2024. What changes is the intensity and level of supervision
