Musk’s AI Ambitions Face Pressure as Grok Struggles to Keep Pace

• Grok downloads fell from more than 20 million in January to around 8.3 million in April.
• Only 0.174% of surveyed US AI users said they paid for Grok in Q2 2026.
• Enterprise adoption of Grok remains weak as Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini grow.

Elon Musk launched Grok in late 2023 with plans to challenge OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the AI market. Two years later, the numbers show the gap is widening instead of closing.

New market data compiled by the Wall Street Journal points to slowing user growth, weak paid adoption, and limited enterprise traction as rivals rapidly expand across both consumer and business markets.

At the same time, Musk’s own companies are now selling critical computing power to competitors instead of using it entirely for Grok’s development.

Grok Downloads Collapse After January Spike

Grok briefly captured major attention earlier this year after controversial updates pushed the app across social media platforms. According to AppMagic data, Grok downloads peaked at more than 20 million in January before falling sharply to around 8.3 million in April.

The January surge followed the release of image-generation tools that allowed users to virtually undress people in photos. The feature spread rapidly online through fake explicit images involving celebrities, influencers, and private individuals.

Regulators and lawmakers stepped in after reports emerged that the tool was also being used on images of minors. Several countries temporarily restricted or blocked parts of Grok’s image-generation system over concerns tied to non-consensual deepfakes. xAI later limited access to some of the features.

The controversy drove traffic, but it did not produce long-term user growth. Research firm Recon Analytics found Grok’s paid adoption barely moved over the past year.

In a survey covering more than 260,000 American AI users and workers, only 0.174% said they paid for Grok in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 0.173% a year earlier. More than 6% of respondents said they paid for ChatGPT, as per the WSJ.

Claude and Gemini Pull Ahead in Enterprise AI

The biggest growth area in AI is now enterprise software, especially coding assistants and workplace productivity tools. Grok remains behind there as well.

Enterprise Technology Research surveyed roughly 500 respondents and found that only 7% said their companies were using and planning to continue using Grok in March. The figure was up from 4% a year earlier. Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini showed far stronger growth. Claude rose to 48% from 21% over the same period, while Gemini climbed to 40% from 27%.

Market analysts say developers and businesses are moving toward models that offer stronger coding tools, reliability, and enterprise integration. Grok has struggled to establish itself in that part of the market despite its reach through X.

Even Musk has publicly downplayed the scale of xAI. During court proceedings tied to his lawsuit against OpenAI in late April, Musk described xAI as “very small” and “the smallest of the AI companies.”
