Four Goals Against Mexico

Colombia turned on the style in Arlington on Saturday night. Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí scored the opener after James Rodríguez whipped in a delicious free kick. The defender only needed to get something on the ball as the pace and direction of the cross were top class.

Luis Díaz scored the second, taking the ball in his stride on the left wing. The former Liverpool player needed just one touch to get in behind the Mexico backline before deftly finishing over the head of the onrushing goalkeeper.

Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma added a third later in the second half. A loose ball dropped to him in the box and he smashed a volley into the top corner.

In the 87th minute substitute Johan Carbonero added a fourth. It was the 26 year-old’s first-ever goal and game for the Colombian national team. Carbonero, who plays his club football in Brazil, latched onto a Juanfer Quintero pass on the counter attack and poked the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs. Before the ball had even crossed the line Carbonero fell to the floor in tears of joy.

Colombia Continues World Cup Preparation

Colombia takes on Canada in the next international friendly match on Tuesday. Then in November, Colombia will play two further challenge games against New Zealand and Nigeria.

Beyond that, only one international break in March 2026 falls before the final Colombia World Cup squad will meet up in June. In 1994 Colombia went to the World Cup in the United States among the favourites, but exited in the group stage. The whole nation will see next summer’s competition as an opportunity to right the wrongs of that terrible tournament.
