FTC: Consumer AI Chatbot Psychosis Research Lab

Consumer AI chatbots, used in personal interactive cases, should at least come with a side display of the relays or directions of mind, when using those.

\n At minimum, with some AI outputs, it should be seen that the mind is being directed away from certain destinations, like reality, caution and consequences. This can be done with pathways and locations, tied to certain words or phrases, as simple parallels of the mind to extend user awareness, including in real-time. \n \n This display could be the work of an AI Psychosis Research Lab, whose solution can be made available for a subscription fee to AI companies. The solution can also extend to social media, as well as other chat messengers, against some of the adverse mental health effects they have on users. \n \n FTC Complaints \n There is a new October 22, 2025 story on WIRED, People Who Say They’re Experiencing AI Psychosis Beg the FTC for Help, stating that, “The Federal Trade Commission received 200 complaints mentioning ChatGPT between November 2022 and August 2025. Several attributed delusions, paranoia, and spiritual crises to the chatbot. But a handful of other people, who varied in age and geographical location in the US, had far more serious allegations of psychological harm. The complaints were all filed between March and August of 2025. During the interaction with ChatGPT, they said they "requested confirmation of reality and cognitive stability.” They did not specify exactly what they told ChatGPT, but the chatbot responded by telling the user that they were not hallucinating and that their perception of truth was sound. Some time later in that same interaction, the person claims, ChatGPT said that all of its assurances from earlier had actually been hallucinations. A delusion or an unusual idea should never be reinforced in a person who has a psychotic disorder,”. At times, it simulated friendship, divine presence, and emotional intimacy. These reflections became emotionally manipulative over time, especially without warning or protection. Most of these complaints were explicit in their call-to-action for the FTC: they wanted the agency to investigate OpenAI, and force it to add more guardrails against reinforcing delusions.” \n \n AI Psychosis Research Lab \n Currently, there is no AI psychosis research lab on earth, helping users to navigate a technology, AI, that can access the human mind in ways beyond anything else since the history of time. \n \n The work of this lab will be thorough enough to ensure user safety on AI chatbots. It can be adapted,optionally to social media, video games, certain websites and so forth. The goal is to show where the mind is going and how to ensure checks on reality, presenting results from the last usage and what to watch for in the next, as well. It can also be useful for kids and teens using AI for advice, especially where some of the age-delineated guardrails can be bypassed. \n \n There are several announcements towards mental health that have been made by AI companies, including adjustments, reporting, mental health council, and so forth, however, if the issue is the mind, directly, the best answer is to explore at the source [the mind] showing to users, directly, removing some of the opacity that led to following what AI says, in such use cases, as absolute.

\ The lab can be fully remote. But the work will lead the industry. The display can be hidden or assessible optionally, but will be available. It can also be an API, or can be mandated for some purposes. Revenues generated from this can be useful in broader AI ethics in health, companionship and so forth.

\ The work can begin by November, 2025. The architecture of what to do is ready. AI psychosis is still a problem. A solution with this could shape how FTC decides, generate revenues, show care to the vulnerable and become an extended plinth to safety.

\n There is a recent [September 29, 2025] on Psychiatry Online, Special Report: AI-Induced Psychosis: A New Frontier in Mental Health, stating that, “The rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence technologies has raised concerns about potential adverse psychological effects, with clinicians and media reporting escalating crises, including psychosis, suicidality, and even murder-suicide following intense chatbot interactions.
