Lando Norris put in a strong performance in sprint qualifying to grab pole position for Saturday’s short race at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.
The current championship leader clocked a lap time of 1m 09.243s, edging out Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 0.097 seconds and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by 0.185 seconds to secure the top spot.
The other Mercedes of George Russell secured fourth place, while Fernando Alonso put his Aston Martin in a strong fifth, two positions ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll.
Sandwiched between the two Aston Martins is Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who has considerable work to do on Saturday.
Charles Leclerc took eighth for Ferrari, with Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls and Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber rounding out the top 10.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton found himself out of the sprint qualifying at the end of the second segment, settling for 11th place.
He was later investigated for a yellow-flag infringement which could have resulted in a grid penalty, but the seven-time world champion escaped with a reprimand only – his first of the season.
