2025 has been a very busy year for Elton John. The piano player may have retired from touring after the conclusion of his half-decade-long Farewell Yellow Brick Road venture, but the superstar remains not just active, but prolific.

In addition to performing at one of his biggest shows ever in Singapore, John also released a new album, Who Believes in Angels?, with Brandi Carlile, and multiple singles across a variety of projects. Amidst everything he’s doing, John also recently shared an anniversary edition of his album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, which has seen its sales skyrocket as it debuts on multiple Billboard charts in America.

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy Returns After 50 Years

In late October, John dropped the fiftieth-anniversary reissue of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. The singer’s ninth album, which originally arrived in 1975, was recently shared via multiple versions, and fans snapped up copies of every option. All formats are grouped together by Billboard into one charting entity, which helps it launch in impressive positions. The half-century-celebrating offering features demos, a bonus track, and an entire separate disc recorded live at Wembley Stadium in June 1975, when John played the original project.

In the tracking frame reflected on the current Billboard charts, Luminate reports that Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy sold a little less than 4,100 copies. The frame prior, it didn’t even manage triple-digit sales. From one moment to the next, the piano star’s set saw its pure purchases increase by more than 7,700%.

Elton John’s Album Debuts on Two Billboard Charts

Thanks to that improvement in sales, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy debuts on a pair of Billboard tallies. The set opens highest on the Top Album Sales ranking, starting at No. 18. It also launches at No. 20 on the Vinyl Albums roster.

Elton John Lands a Milestone Vinyl Bestseller

John scores his milestone tenth placement on the Vinyl Albums list, which, as its name suggests, ranks the bestselling titles on wax throughout the United States. He reached a career high earlier this year with Who Believes in Angels? alongside Carlile, when that project opened and peaked at No. 3. Throughout his career, he has racked up four top 10s, but has somehow never reached No. 1.

Who Believes in Angels? Helped Elton John Climb Higher Than Ever on the Sales Chart

Just as is the case on the Vinyl Albums list, John rose higher than ever on the Top Album Sales chart only a few months back when Who Believes in Angels? missed out on becoming his first champion by one spot. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is the superstar’s thirty-first bestseller in America. That roundup includes 10 top 10s but, once more, not a single No. 1.

“Someone Saved My Life Tonight” Remains a Defining Elton John Hit

While Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy doesn’t reach the top 10 on any of the rankings on which it debuts this frame, the set has previously performed extremely well on the most important albums tally in the nation. John sent the title to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 during its initial run. Lead single “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100. The full-length has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for moving three million units, while the beloved song has earned a platinum plaque.

Did Elton John Earn Any 2026 Grammy Nominations?

John is also celebrating his two newly-minted Grammy nominations. Who Believes In Angels?, which was predicted to score an Album of the Year nod – but which did not end up in the running for the top honor – is competing against titles from the likes of Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand and Jennifer Hudson for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. His tune “Never Too Late” from his documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, is up for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and it was also in the running for the Best Original Song Academy Award earlier this year.
