Since dropping her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess more than two years ago, Chappell Roan has been riding high off the incredible popularity of multiple tracks featured on the full-length, including “Pink Pony Club,” “Red Wine Supernova,” and “Hot to Go!” The singer-songwriter has also shared a trio of standalone tunes — at least so far, they’re not connected to any larger project — including her breakout smash “Good Luck, Babe!,” as well as both “The Giver” and “The Subway” in 2025.

The latter track brings the current holder of the Best New Artist Grammy back to music’s biggest night, as it was nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance just a few days ago. Months after it became a big hit in the United Kingdom, a vinyl release turns “The Subway” into a bestseller all over again — but Roan just narrowly misses out on scoring a new No. 1 on multiple tallies with her current single.

Chappell Roan Misses No. 1 by One Space

This week, “The Subway” launches in the runner-up space on both the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles charts. That’s a lofty opening position for a tune that was originally released back in late July and which has already sold well — though, until now, not on physical mediums in the U.K.

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” Blocks Chappell Roan From No. 1

The same song blocks Roan from reaching the top spot on the two sales charts. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” returns to the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles rosters, hitting No. 1 for the very first time — months into its time on the tallies and half a century after its initial release.

Chappell Roan Misses No. 1 for the First Time in Her Career

On the Official Vinyl Singles chart, “The Subway” is Roan’s first win to fail to make it to the penthouse. “Good Luck, Babe!,” “Pink Pony Club,” and “The Giver” all spent time running the show.

Chappell Roan’s “The Subway” Joins “The Giver”

Over on the Official Physical Singles tally, Roan has experienced a similar ride, although “The Subway” is not her first near-miss. “The Giver,” which debuted on the tally in July of this year, also peaked at No. 2, while both “Good Luck, Babe!” and “Pink Pony Club” dominated.

“The Subway” Rides Again on the Sales Chart

At the same time that “The Subway” opens in second place on two rankings, it also appears at No. 2 on the Official Singles Sales chart. The Grammy-nominated tune is not new to the general ranking of the bestselling tracks across the U.K., however. “The Subway” debuted at No. 3 — which stood as its peak position until now — back in August. So far, the cut has lived on the busy list for a lucky 13 frames.

Chappell Roan Extends Her Streak of Near-No. 1 Hits

Roan has now landed five wins on the Official Singles Sales chart. Amazingly, “The Subway” is her fourth track to peak at No. 2, and she’s never made it to No. 1. “Good Luck, Babe!,” “Pink Pony Club,” and “The Giver” all stalled one space shy of the top spot, while “Hot to Go!” only rose to No. 27 during its run.

“The Subway” appears on four rankings across the Atlantic, and as it debuts on half of them and returns to another, it has no need to find its way back to the Official Singles chart. Instead, on the main tally of the biggest hits in the U.K., “The Subway” leaps from No. 77 to No. 53. Roan debuted her latest focus cut in first place in the summer, instantly doubling her total number of winners, as “Pink Pony Club” spent two weeks at No. 1.

Chappell Roan’s Chart Hits

“The Subway” is one of four hits currently on the U.K. charts from Roan. “Pink Pony Club” is still a major winner, as it lives on half a dozen tallies. “The Giver” and “Good Luck, Babe!” appear only on the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles charts, with the former declining several spots while “Good Luck, Babe!” improves by at least 10 spaces on the two rosters.
