Today’s smart home features multiple disconnected gadgets, including a smart speaker, smart lights and a smart thermostat. These devices typically operate independently rather than as a cohesive system.

In the next decade, the concept of a smart home is poised to evolve from a novelty to a fully integrated and predictive ecosystem. Here are some predictions for how the smart home landscape will change in the next decade.

1) The Shift From Smart to Intelligent

The current generation of smart devices is primarily designed to enhance household energy efficiency and reduce consumption. They await your command, whether it’s a tap in the app, a preset schedule, or a voice command. Without a trigger, they wouldn’t function as desired.

Expect to witness a more integrated ecosystem that anticipates your needs. The future generation of smart devices is theorized to make decisions on your behalf without a clear trigger. They will operate based on learning your patterns and understanding context.

2) Intelligent Kitchens and Bathrooms

The kitchen will evolve from a space for cooking to a central hub of technology. In the next years, expect to see smart appliances that can track your usage and suggest settings. In fact, you can get a taste of a smarter kitchen with Samsung’s latest innovation.

On December 22, 2025, the electronic brand announced that it will release its latest kitchen appliances next year, including the Bespoke AI refrigerator, which can identify various types of food and suggest a grocery list.

You can expect to experience the same advanced features in your bathroom. AI-powered smart mirrors can soon reflect things that you can’t see, including micro-expressions, changes in hydration levels and posture alignment. Toilets will soon have advanced sensors that can analyze urine and stool for health indicators, such as hydration, glucose and gut health.

3) Advanced Home Security and Access

The use of smart devices is expected to increase and is projected to reach 103.15 million U.S. homes by 2028. With homes collecting large amounts of personal data and controlling access and security, the risk from hackers becomes significantly higher.

The next generation of security devices will help prevent incidents before they occur. Using predictive analysis, they can learn the usual patterns in your neighborhood — the times the mail is received or when neighbors walk their dogs.

When you’re on vacation, future smart devices won’t just turn a lamp on and off. They will replicate your family’s usual patterns — turning on lights in different rooms, activating the TV’s sound, and raising and lowering smart blinds at appropriate times.

4) Proactive Health and Wellness Monitoring

Homes will become a passive health device after a decade. Nowadays, there are smart mattresses that can record your biometric data —your actual sleep time, when you leave the bed, breathing rate, heart rate and heart rate variability. Given these advanced technologies, you can expect future mattresses to gently wake you at the optimal time when you seem to be oversleeping.

Once the other devices detect your waking activity, they will adapt. The coffee machine automatically delays its start time, and the bathroom mirror displays a simple message, “Consider a 20-minute walk today to help regulate your sleep cycle.”

5) Augmented Reality (AR) Interfaces

An AR interface means you are no longer limited to your phone screen, TV or a physical remote to control your home. Instead, digital controls and information are laid directly onto your view of the physical world, typically viewed through AR glasses. Today, AR is prominently used in video games through glasses and smartphones.

In the next decade, you can expect to adjust your home settings through your AR glasses — simply pinch your fingers in the air to slide up or down a smart lamp’s settings to adjust the brightness. You can also walk around and see your energy consumption data come to life. AR interfaces will make smart homes feel like a collection of gadgets and more like an intuitive extension of your home.

Reimagine Your Home

The smart home of the next decade is powered by AI advancements, seamless interoperability and the expansion of smart technology into all corners of the space. Soon enough, you can create a living space that is not only smart but also more sustainable and better attuned to your needs.
