2 Dems help Republicans confirm Trump's pick to replace DHS secretary

The Senate confirmed Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) as homeland security secretary Monday in a 54-45 vote, with crucial support from two Democrats breaking ranks.

Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) voted for Mullin despite Democratic opposition, while Rand Paul (R-KY) voted against his party colleague following their contentious confirmation hearing clash.

Mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter and plumbing company owner, takes over a department facing a public confidence crisis following controversial immigration enforcement operations. Recent polling shows Americans believe immigration agents have overstepped, particularly after the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis.

Mullin inherits DHS amid a partial government shutdown with thousands of employees working without pay. At his hearing, Mullin pledged immigration officers would require judicial warrants before entering homes and suggested limiting sweeping operations in Democratic-led cities.
