That would be Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, which hit theaters this weekend. The event only ran from October 3-5, but during that weekend, it made $33 million domestically, winning the weekend box office over the likes of One Battle After Another and The Smashing Machine, and it has made $43 million globally, a huge boost for her in addition to her actual album sales and streams. What’s noteworthy is also how fans received it. As it stands, the release party Showgirl movie has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes from well over a thousand verified audience reviews, which would make it one of the highest-scored films of the year by that metric. In contrast, there are only five critic reviews in for the showcase, four positive, one negative. So, an 80% with a tiny amount of reviews in. Of course, that 95% is from a lot of Taylor superfans who were motivated enough to head out to watch a movie about an album, which requires some serious dedication. While there are certainly some Taylor fans that do not like The Life of a Showgirl (it’s proven to be a very controversial album online), it stands to reason that most fans would love something like this.

What was this? Here’s the description of the “party”:

So it’s not just sitting around and listening to tracks back-to-back. It would also not be a quiet experience. The album was out Friday, so there was no doubt a bunch of fans ready to sing along and dance, and I don’t know, cry? I’ve been to three Taylor Swift shows, and it certainly happens (Eras was awesome!).

Again, this is a one-weekend-only show, so it will not have a second weekend to earn any more. Some moviegoers were upset that this took up so many screens in so many theaters, pushing out actual movies like One Battle After Another, one of the best of the year. But next week, that will no longer be the case. I doubt The Rock was terribly amused that his prestige picture, The Smashing Machine, came out this weekend. It only made $6 million, far and away the lowest of his career. Don’t mess with Taylor.
