MANILA, Philippines – There is no end in sight in the escalating tensions between China and Taiwan.
China has continuously launched large-scale military drills around Taiwan while allegedly trying to intervene in various aspects of society, including election of political leaders. In October 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for renewed efforts to advance “reunification” in a congratulatory message to Cheng Li-wun, the newly elected leader of Taiwan’s main opposition party.
On Friday, November 28, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug speaks to analyst J. Michael Cole to discuss the importance of defending Taiwan for global stability and the future of democracy.
Cole is the author of The Taiwan Tinderbox: The Island-Nation at the Center of the New Cold War, an in-depth examination of Taiwan’s growing vulnerability to Chinese military aggression.
