OpenAI Buys Neptune to Enhance GPT Model Development

TLDR

  • OpenAI is acquiring Neptune, a company that makes tools for tracking AI model training
  • The purchase price is reportedly under $400 million in stock
  • Neptune’s technology helps monitor and debug large language model training processes
  • The startup has raised over $18 million since becoming independent in 2018
  • Neptune will stop serving external clients as it joins OpenAI

OpenAI announced Wednesday it will acquire Neptune, a startup focused on AI model training tools. The deal adds to OpenAI’s growing list of acquisitions this year.

According to The Information, the purchase price is less than $400 million in stock. OpenAI has not confirmed these figures publicly.

Neptune builds software that monitors and debugs AI model training. Companies use these tools to track how their models develop and identify problems during the training process.

OpenAI already counts itself as a Neptune customer. The ChatGPT creator uses Neptune’s platform to monitor its GPT large language models.

Neptune CEO Piotr Niedźwiedź announced the deal in a company blog post. He said Neptune will wind down services for external customers over the next few months.

The two companies have worked together on a metrics dashboard. This tool helps teams building foundation models track their progress.

What Neptune Brings to OpenAI

Neptune started as an internal project at Deepsense before spinning out in 2018. Since then, it has raised over $18 million from investors including Almaz Capital and TDJ Pitango Ventures.

The startup serves major technology and healthcare companies. Its client list includes Samsung, Roche, and HP.

OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki praised Neptune’s system. He called it fast and precise for analyzing complex training workflows.

Pachocki said OpenAI will integrate Neptune’s tools into its training infrastructure. This will give the company better insight into how its models learn.

Neptune’s technology allows researchers to monitor experiments in real time. Teams can compare different training runs and spot issues before they become bigger problems.

OpenAI’s Acquisition Strategy

This is OpenAI’s fourth major acquisition of 2024. The company bought Software Applications Incorporated in October for an undisclosed amount.

In September, OpenAI acquired product development company Statsig for $1.1 billion. The company also purchased Jony Ive’s AI device startup io in May for over $6 billion.

OpenAI reached a $500 billion valuation in October. This came after current and former employees sold about $6.6 billion in shares.

Microsoft backs OpenAI and remains a key partner. The company is considering going public with a potential IPO that could value it at $1 trillion.

Reuters reported OpenAI might file with regulators in the second half of 2026. However, CFO Sarah Friar said in November that an IPO is not imminent.

OpenAI has also taken stakes in other companies. The firm invested in Thrive Holdings to bring AI into industries like accounting and IT services.

Neptune’s Niedźwiedź thanked customers, investors, and team members. He said the journey has been remarkable but believes it’s just the beginning.

The acquisition still needs to meet standard closing conditions before finalizing.

The post Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson has weighed in on whether the Federal Reserve should make a 25 basis points (bps) Fed rate cut or 50 bps cut. This comes ahead of the Fed decision today at today’s FOMC meeting, with the market pricing in a 25 bps cut. Bitcoin and the broader crypto market are currently trading flat ahead of the rate cut decision. Franklin Templeton CEO Weighs In On Potential FOMC Decision In a CNBC interview, Jenny Johnson said that she expects the Fed to make a 25 bps cut today instead of a 50 bps cut. She acknowledged the jobs data, which suggested that the labor market is weakening. However, she noted that this data is backward-looking, indicating that it doesn’t show the current state of the economy. She alluded to the wage growth, which she remarked is an indication of a robust labor market. She added that retail sales are up and that consumers are still spending, despite inflation being sticky at 3%, which makes a case for why the FOMC should opt against a 50-basis-point Fed rate cut. In line with this, the Franklin Templeton CEO said that she would go with a 25 bps rate cut if she were Jerome Powell. She remarked that the Fed still has the October and December FOMC meetings to make further cuts if the incoming data warrants it. Johnson also asserted that the data show a robust economy. However, she noted that there can’t be an argument for no Fed rate cut since Powell already signaled at Jackson Hole that they were likely to lower interest rates at this meeting due to concerns over a weakening labor market. Notably, her comment comes as experts argue for both sides on why the Fed should make a 25 bps cut or…
