OpenAI launches AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers to boost AI skills and career opportunities, aiming to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.
OpenAI has announced the launch of its first certification courses, AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, designed to enhance real-world AI skills and boost career opportunities. These courses are part of OpenAI’s broader initiative to expand economic opportunities through AI, as outlined in September, with the goal of certifying 10 million Americans by 2030, according to OpenAI.
AI Foundations Course
The AI Foundations course aims to provide practical AI skills applicable across various roles and industries. This course is unique as it integrates directly with ChatGPT, offering learners an immersive environment to practice tasks, receive feedback, and reflect on their progress. Upon completion, participants earn a badge verifying their job-ready AI skills, with the option to pursue full OpenAI Certification through additional courses and projects.
The course is launching through pilot programs in collaboration with leading employers and public-sector partners, including Walmart, John Deere, and the Office of the Governor of Delaware. OpenAI is working with partners like Coursera, ETS, and Credly by Pearson to ensure the courses meet high standards for learning design and real-world impact.
ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers
In addition to AI Foundations, OpenAI is introducing ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, a course tailored for K-12 educators. This course covers the fundamentals of ChatGPT, teaching educators how to navigate and apply the tool in classroom and administrative tasks. Initially available on Coursera, OpenAI plans to integrate this experience directly into ChatGPT for Teachers by early 2026.
OpenAI’s efforts are supported by a partnership with the American Federation of Teachers, aiming to equip 400,000 K-12 educators with practical AI skills. This initiative is part of OpenAI’s broader commitment to integrating AI into educational tools and ensuring teachers can effectively guide students in using AI technology.
Expanding Opportunities
The introduction of these courses aligns with OpenAI’s strategy to connect learning, certification, and real economic opportunities. The organization is also partnering with Upwork to facilitate the hiring of individuals with AI skills, ensuring that technical expertise translates into new economic possibilities globally. OpenAI’s collaboration with Indeed further supports these efforts to expand opportunities for all.
