SHIBAINU (SHIB) tokenomics

Shiba Inu (SHIB) was launched on July 31, 2020, as a decentralized, community-led cryptocurrency project on the Ethereum blockchain. Originally starting as a meme-based experiment, it has evolved into a multi-token ecosystem featuring decentralized finance (DeFi) capabilities, a Layer-2 scaling solution (Shibarium), and various incentive structures.

Issuance Mechanism

The issuance of SHIB was characterized by a unique "fair launch" approach without a private sale or initial coin offering (ICO).

• Initial Supply: The total supply of SHIB was set at 1 quadrillion tokens.
• Launch Strategy: Upon launch, the anonymous creator "Ryoshi" implemented a two-part distribution strategy:
  • 50% (500 trillion SHIB) was locked into a liquidity pool on Uniswap (SHIB-ETH). The keys to this liquidity were reportedly discarded to ensure the team could not withdraw the funds.
  • 50% (500 trillion SHIB) was sent to the personal wallet of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
• Current Supply Status: As of early 2024, the circulating supply is approximately 589.26 trillion SHIB. This reduction from the initial quadrillion is primarily due to significant burn events.

Allocation Mechanism

Unlike many contemporary crypto projects, the Shiba Inu team did not allocate a share of the total token supply to themselves, employees, or advisors. The allocation was split entirely between the public liquidity pool and Vitalik Buterin.

Vitalik Buterin's Allocation and Burn

The 50% sent to Vitalik Buterin underwent a major transformation in May 2021:

• Burn: Buterin burned approximately 410.24 trillion SHIB (roughly 41% of the total supply) by sending them to a "null" address.
• Donation: He donated 50 trillion SHIB to the India COVID-Crypto Relief Fund.
• Remaining: The remaining portion was designated for other charitable causes.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The Shiba Inu ecosystem utilizes SHIB alongside other tokens—BONE, LEASH, and the upcoming TREAT—to drive utility and participation.

Primary Token Functionalities

Ecosystem Roles

• BONE: Serves as the governance token for the Doggy DAO and is the native gas token for the Shibarium Layer-2 network.
• LEASH: A loyalty token with a limited supply (107,646 tokens) that provides exclusive access to NFT mints and metaverse land sales.
• TREAT: The "grand finale" token designed for rewards, governance, and unlocking advanced features within the ecosystem.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanisms

Shiba Inu does not follow a traditional corporate vesting or unlocking schedule because there was no team allocation or private investor round.

• Locking Mechanism: The primary locking mechanism is voluntary and user-driven through the ShibaSwap platform. When users "Bury" (stake) their tokens, they are effectively locking them to earn rewards.
• Unlocking Time: Staking rewards on ShibaSwap were historically distributed every two weeks. While users can generally unstake their tokens, the ecosystem has previously utilized time-locks for a portion of rewards (e.g., 66% of rewards being locked for six months during the initial liquidity event) to ensure long-term stability.
• Burn Mechanism: The project has moved toward deflationary mechanics rather than unlocking schedules. An automatic SHIB burn mechanism is intended for implementation on Shibarium, where a portion of base transaction fees is used to buy back and burn SHIB, permanently removing it from circulation.
