Monero (XMR) tokenomics

Monero (XMR) is a privacy-focused, Layer-1 cryptocurrency that utilizes a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism. Its token economics are designed to support a decentralized, fungible, and secure digital currency that offers anonymity by default.

Issuance Mechanism

Monero's issuance is characterized by a continuous inflationary model designed to ensure long-term network security through permanent miner incentives.

• Proof-of-Work Rewards: Miners earn rewards for providing hash power to produce blocks and secure the network. These rewards consist of network transaction fees and inflationary emissions paid in XMR.
• Tail Emission: In June 2022, Monero reached its "tail emission" phase. This fixed the inflationary block rewards at 0.6 XMR per two-minute block in perpetuity. This mechanism ensures that miners always have an incentive to secure the network, regardless of the volume of transaction fees.
• Dynamic Block Size and Penalties: Monero does not have a hard cap on block sizes. Instead, it uses a soft cap. If a miner produces a block exceeding the median size of the prior 100 blocks, the block reward is reduced quadratically. The maximum block size is capped at two times the median of the prior 100 blocks, at which point the block reward approaches zero.

Allocation Mechanism

Unlike many modern blockchain projects, Monero did not have an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), pre-mine, or founder's reward.

• Fair Launch: Monero was launched in 2014 as a community-driven project. All XMR in circulation has been issued through the mining process or acquired via secondary markets.
• Community Crowdfunding System (CCS): While there is no community-governed treasury, protocol development is funded through the CCS. This is a donation-based system where anyone can propose projects. Funding is sourced entirely from community donations (XMR and BTC) and managed by the core team.
• Stakeholder Distribution: Because Monero is fundamentally private, there is no public data regarding the concentration of wallet addresses. Information on the percentage held by top addresses is intentionally unavailable to preserve the network's privacy guarantees.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The primary utility of XMR is to serve as a private medium of exchange and to facilitate network operations.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Monero includes specific features related to the temporal availability of funds to enhance security and privacy.

• Transaction Locking: When receiving Monero, funds may be locked for an arbitrary time if the sender chooses to implement a lock. This prevents the recipient from spending the XMR until the specified lock time expires.
• Standard Confirmation Lock: For standard security, transactions typically require a certain number of block confirmations before the funds become "unlocked" and available for further spending in a wallet.
• No Staking Locks: Monero does not have a native staking or liquidity provision mechanism that requires long-term token locking (such as those found in Proof-of-Stake networks). Consequently, there are no formal "unlocking schedules" for investors or team members, as no such allocations exist.
