Trump’s peace talk claim immediately collapses with sharp rebuke: report
President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that peace talks between the United States and Iran were set to resume on Monday, but within a matter of hours, the claim was fiercely rebuked by a senior Iranian official.
“Despite Trump's announcement this morning that a new round of negotiations has been set, a senior Iranian official told me Tehran has not officially agreed to talks,” wrote Drop Site News reporter Jeremy Scahill, citing a senior Iranian official who spoke with the outlet on the condition of anonymity.
Trump has aggressively pushed for Iran to accept a deal with the United States to bring about an end to the U.S. war against Iran, but thus far has come up short. A U.S. delegation met with Iranian officials last week in Islamabad, Pakistan, but failed to reach an agreement to bring about an end to the conflict.
Trump told multiple media outlets that a U.S. delegation was being sent for a second round of talks in Pakistan, but according to the senior Iranian official, Tehran has outright rejected the Trump administration’s requests for negotiations.
Furthermore, the official warned that Trump’s erratic behavior was jeopardizing any future potential for a negotiated settlement.
“Our assessment is that Trump effectively lacks both a coherent plan and the capacity to secure even a temporary agreement,” the official told Drop Site News in its report published on Sunday. “His decision-making appears to be grounded in Israeli political and security assessments, conveyed to him on a daily basis.”
