GOP analyst issues dark warning after 'embarrassing' WSJ report on Trump's war

A long-time GOP analyst issued a dark warning during a new podcast episode on Sunday while discussing a bombshell new report from the Wall Street Journal.

On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal published a behind-the-scenes look at how President Donald Trump responded when the Iranians shot down an American fighter jet on Good Friday. According to the report, Trump's aides kept him out of the room during a critical point in the mission to rescue the downed airman because they worried his "impatience wouldn't be helpful."

"Aides kept the president out of the room as they got minute-by-minute updates because they believed his impatience wouldn’t be helpful, instead updating him at meaningful moments, a senior administration official said," the report reads in part.

Sarah Longwell, publisher of The Bulwark, and Sam Stein, the outlet's managing editor, were floored by the report on a new episode of "Bulwark Takes."

Stein described the report as "damning" and "embarrassing."

Longwell said the report furthered her theory that the Iran war is being stoked by Trump's subconscious because removing him from the situation created the best outcome.

She also warned that the report showed how the situation in Iran could worsen.

"I don't know what to say about that other than this is the thing. If Trump is doing it himself and he gets backed into a corner and he thinks he's about to be humiliated, it blows up his 'Art of the Deal' thing," Longwell said. "That's why he has to look for an off-ramp. But if he gets cornered, I think he could start bombing things for real."
