Audio-streaming giant Spotify is branching into fitness programming, with guided workout experiences designed to appeal to the 70% of its users who work out at least monthly.
The move also leverages Spotify’s utility in creating or curating playlists, where users already have 150 million fitness-focused compilations. The company said fitness and workout lists are also a popular request on its new Prompted Playlist feature.
“For nearly two decades, Spotify has been the soundtrack to the world’s workouts,” said Spotify VP, Global Head of Podcasts Roman Wasenmüller. “Today, we are expanding Spotify to become a true daily wellness companion. By bringing thousands of creators and partners like Peloton directly into our video and audio ecosystem, we are investing in a future where Spotify isn’t just where you spend your time—it’s where you go to build momentum, improve your wellbeing, and get more out of every day.”
The initial offering will include 1,400 workout episodes and “dozens” of curated playlists from notable creators such as Yoga with Kassandra, Cailin K’eli Yoga, Sweaty Studio, Chloe Ting, Pilates Body by Raven, Abi Mills Wellness, and Sophiereidfit.
The offerings will be available to both free and paid users. Most will be in English, with some available also in Spanish or German. The classes will also be downloadable, so they can be played back without an Internet connection.
In a blog post, the company said, “Time on Spotify should feel meaningful and intentional, not something that just slips away in a blur of mindless scrolling. That’s why we’re always investing in more experiences that leave you feeling more energized, in control and empowered.”
The move creates yet another area where Spotify will directly compete for user time, attention and dollars with Apple, Apple many app offerings include ones for music, fitness and podcasts, which recently began carrying video as well as audio conversations. The Apple music and fitness offerings are only available by subscription, either standalone or as part of various combinations of the Apple One bundle.
