U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened a reduction of U.S. troops in Germany, writing on Truth Social, “The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time."
But one senior U.S. official told CBS News that the president's tweet has little to back it up.
And according to CBS News' Margaret Brennan, a "senior official tells CBS that no options have been given to the President yet regarding a reduction in forces in Germany."
In an April 30 post on X, Brennan reports, "This official points out that Germany continues to provide quiet support to U.S. forces in the Middle East, which is a consideration. Meanwhile, Trump and [Secretary of Defense Pete] Hegseth posted that the U.S. is studying and reviewing a 'possible' reduction from Germany. Rubio also spoke with German FM."
Brennan highlights a tweet from the U.S. Mission to the EU.
According to that tweet, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio "spoke with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on the ongoing situation with Iran."
The U.S. Mission tweet explains, "The Secretary and Foreign Minister discussed the security situation in the region and underscored the importance of securing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
