Columnist Mona Charen argues President Donald Trump's pattern of corruption and self-dealing, long overlooked by the American public, may finally be catching up to him due to deteriorating economic conditions.
Writing for The Bulwark on Thursday, Charen examines Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over a tax return leak, calling it a "gargantuan shakedown" with a claim amount exceeding two-thirds of the IRS's annual budget.

Judge Kathleen Williams questioned the lawsuit's validity, noting Trump sits on both sides of the case as both plaintiff and superior to all respondents.
Charen then references other Trump self-enrichment schemes including a luxury jet from Qatar and White House ballroom funding. She argues voters accepted Trump's corruption in 2024 betting on economic improvement, but conditions have worsened with high gas prices and rising grocery costs.
Charen ends her piece, writing, "The corruption never seemed to matter much to the American people before, but when gas prices are near $5 a gallon, groceries have only gone up, and the economy is skidding toward recession, the gold leaf becomes not an eccentricity but an indictment."
"The worm has turned."
