Walrus Protocol sets decentralized storage at $0.023/GB/month in USD, matching cloud giants while adding verifiability, redundancy, and programmable access.

The number is $0.023. Per gigabyte. Per month. That is what Walrus Protocol is now charging for decentralized storage on its network. Fixed. In US dollars. Not in token value that swings with the market.

The Walrus Foundation announced the pricing shift on May 13, 2026. Builders and developers have been waiting for this. Price predictability is one of the things that has kept decentralized storage from becoming a serious alternative to centralized infrastructure.

When the Price Doesn’t Move, the Budget Can

Payments on Walrus still go through WAL, the network’s native token. What changes is that the USD rate stays fixed at $0.023 per GB per month regardless of what WAL is doing. Storage nodes pull WAL prices from multiple sources and automatically update their onchain price vote to stay aligned with the dollar peg. SUI handles gas fees separately.

The idea is simple. Builders should not have to check token prices before running cost forecasts. That kind of unpredictability kills adoption at the planning stage, long before a product ships.

Decentralized storage has existed for years, with projects like Filecoin, Arweave, and Storj building out the space at different price and reliability trade-offs. What most of them have not solved cleanly is price stability that developers can actually budget around.

What $0.023 Actually Gets You

The rate matches centralized providers on price. The Walrus Foundation says it goes further on features. Data on Walrus is encoded with erasure coding that delivers roughly 4.5x redundancy across independent storage nodes. Getting that level of redundancy on AWS S3, for example, typically means paying to replicate data across multiple regions. Different bill. Different complexity.

Data is also content-addressed and cryptographically verifiable. That means a developer can prove the data has not been changed. Cloud providers use internal checksums, but those do not offer independent verification from outside the system. On Walrus, that proof sits onchain.

Access control is handled through onchain policies. Dynamic, fine-grained permissioning that can be reused across systems. Cloud providers push that through centralized policy layers that usually need extra infrastructure to handle anything dynamic.

The portability angle is worth noting too. Data on Walrus is not locked to a single provider. Moving data between centralized cloud environments carries egress fees and migration overhead. That cost does not exist the same way on a decentralized network.

Sui Network, which powers Walrus at the infrastructure layer, has been drawing increasing attention from developers building storage and finance applications. Walrus sits on top of that foundation.

Builders Are the Target. The Forecast Backs It

The decentralized storage market has been growing steadily. Research from multiple tracking groups projects the sector to surpass $10 billion in market size by the late 2020s, driven by demand for verifiable, censorship-resistant data infrastructure. AI builders in particular have become a focal point.

The Walrus Foundation said pricing predictability is one way it is “demonstrating commitment to helping builders scale and grow reliably.” The team also flagged new tools aimed specifically at AI developers as part of a broader infrastructure push. The cost calculator is available for teams ready to run numbers before migrating.

Fixed pricing will not solve every adoption barrier in decentralized storage. Trust, tooling maturity, and developer familiarity with onchain infrastructure still matter. But removing the price volatility problem is not a small thing. That was a real objection. Now it is not.
