The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) has today officially opened applications for the second edition of its AI Startup Programme, offering African founders the chance to secure up to $100,000 in pre-seed capital. The fully-funded, immersive experience designed to equip Africa’s most promising AI entrepreneurs with the technical, business, product, and leadership skills to build and scale globally competitive AI startups.

This particular cohort arrives at a critical juncture for the continent’s technology ecosystem. As the global artificial intelligence race accelerates, the mandate for African developers is rapidly shifting from the mere consumption of imported data models to sovereign intelligence, building indigenous, locally relevant AI infrastructure.

Key details about the MEST 2027 AI startup programme

The 2027 programme spans a rigorous 11-month timeline. An initial seven-month training phase will drill founders in technical, product, and leadership disciplines. Rather than operating in a silo, the curriculum draws on direct mentorship and business coaching from industry heavyweights, including engineers and executives from OpenAI, Perplexity, Google, and Meltwater.

Following the training, the most viable startups will advance to a four-month incubation period. This phase strictly focuses on product refinement, go-to-market traction, and enterprise readiness. At the end of the cycle, surviving startups will pitch to join the MEST portfolio and secure the $100,000 equity investment.

Emily Fiagbedzi, the AI Startup Programme Director, articulated the structural challenge facing the continent’s digital economy. “AI technology is advancing at an extraordinary pace, and meaningful participation in the global AI economy requires more than access to tools; it requires the ability to build,” she said.

“This program is designed to help talented African founders develop solutions to real challenges while positioning them to compete globally. We are excited to support the next generation of African AI founders through training delivered by some of the most knowledgeable experts in the industry from organisations including OpenAI, Perplexity, Google, and Meltwater,” she said.

Her assessment highlights a persistent gap in the African tech ecosystem: the friction of commercialising deep tech solutions. The programme targets founders actively developing solutions to real-world operational challenges, rather than those building novelty wrappers around existing APIs.

While the inaugural cohort drew talent from seven nations, MEST has defined a specific geographical and demographic focus for the 2027 intake. Applications are open strictly to software developers aged 21 to 35 based in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Kenya.

For founders in these key markets, the MEST programme offers a heavily structured pathway to translate raw technical capability into market-ready enterprise AI. The ultimate test for the 2027 cohort will be demonstrating whether their locally trained models and AI platforms can scale beyond the incubation phase to challenge established global incumbents.
